If you could, please share the story behing the winning photo....for interest, to all.
- as an amateur, I strive for 3 things:
a) the leather grain, of the nose leather
b) crystal clear focused eyes, that shows the dogs inner soul & heart
c) perfect framing
^^^^ Much easier said than done / if you have any photo tips, I (like many) are all ears...big calendar congrats, you two.

There are several things that can account for the sharpness. The first is probably the camera gear, a nikon dslr with a very sharp 50mm lens. I used a circular polarizer lens filter to knock down some of the glare on the nose and eyes and help boost the yellow and green colors also. I shot it at a somewhat wide aperture (probably f8 or f11 as I like to with this lens) so the nose and eyes are both focused. I'm not going to lie, there was a good bit of processing as well- burning, dodging, sharpening, etc. and that's where I decided to crop it in a bit more too. I think Zeus's eyes always look very deep in photos because his irises are so dark and therefore reflect the sky more vividly. The lens filter makes those reflections look a little more natural too. | |
