Bringing a New Dobie into Our Pack- Need advice!

Hello all! This is my first post and my first dobie! My boyfriend's aunt recently passed away and we are taking her two year old female doberman, Bonnie. She is going to be spayed tomorrow and once she recovers we are bringing her back.

I am pretty dog educated and very active in rescue, but I really don't know much about taking care of a doberman. I do know that Bonnie comes from a very reputable breeder and has been to obedience training. She's such a sweet heart and really is great behavior wise. We are a bit worried about introducing her to our house as she is very stressed from losing her mom. She is in a stable temporary foster now, but she had a very hectic three days post-owner death (the woman who volunteered to take her dumped her at the shelter and we had to go get her out and into a temporary foster).

We had a full vet check-up and she is currently healthy. She did have an episode last year where her owner found her laying in the back yard unable to get up. She took her to the emergency vet and they did an Xray, which didn't show anything yet. The vet mentioned it may be a sign of Wobbler's to come.

To give some background about our home, we currently have two neutered male dachshunds, three and five. The older is very mellow and an overall good boy. He is very much a mamas boy and usually ignores dogs for awhile until he warms up to them. The younger is a wild card with a lot of puppy energy still. He gets nervous around larger dogs, especially males, and get snip at a dog and run. We aren't too worried about Hobbes' snipping at Bonnie as of all the dogs he's done it to (and it's a lot unfortunately..) no dog has ever responded. He's only 12lbs and really he snips and runs away yelping. So I think most dogs look at him like, "really?" and brush it off.

Really I'm just looking for advice and tidbits about dobies. I love being a knowledgeable owner and I want to do everything we can to make sure Bonnie gets the best possible care.

Our pre-Bonnie preparations so far are:
-looking for a dog bed for her.
-getting her a coat.

Does anyone have any recommendations for either? I'm pretty sure we're going to get her this bed - Dog Bed With Bolster / Lounger Deep Dish Dog Bed -- Orvis . We have hard wood floors so I want to make sure it'll cushion her enough.

THANKS!!

If she comes from a reputable breeder, has the breeder been contacted about her rehoming? At minimum I would want to inform the breeder that her owner died and you'll be taking her in. You probably will also want that breeder contact if any issues should arise during her transition to your home.

Again, this is assuming she is, in fact, from a good breeder.

She is from a very good breeder. Kristy (the owner) always had dobies, usually two at a time. Bonnie is her sixth doberman from the same breeder. I will have to search through her papers and see if I can find the breeder's information. I know that the breeder used to live in Maryland and moved to Georgia about ten years ago. Kristy traveled all the way to Georgia to continue to get them from the same breeder, so I imagine there's a reasons he was so loyal to the same breeder.

Here is a picture of Bonnie and I. Also, a picture of her while she was at the shelter.. Poor girl! The lady dumped her there without notifying the family. She was supposed to just be keeping her until the family decided what they'd do with her. Kristy died Friday and the "friend" dumped her at the shelter Saturday afternoon. Needless to say, she is no longer a family friend!

She is a little overweight right now at 72lbs. The vet said she should be around 60-65.

I'm also interested in what type of dog food is good for dobies. We feed our dachshunds the Grain Free Annamaet with Instinct Raw Bites mixed in. The plan as of now is to feed Bonnie that as well. Obviously larger dogs have different nutritional requirements from our smaller dogs, so I understand a different food may be necessary.

Bonnie used to be on Innova and was recently switched to Wellness (not sure why). We would NEVER buy dog food from a grocery store or Petsmart, so Bonnie will certainly be getting high quality food.

Any suggestions on foods good for Dobies?

I agree with the breeder aspect. It's very important that they know where she is and have your contact info and vise versa.

I would add that Dobes require a lot of mental stimulation as well as physical stimulation. Find games you can do with her that challenge her psychologically, like search games around the house, teaching her tricks, balls that you can hide food in and the like.

She will need alone time with you as well so maybe enrolling her in obedience classes would be a good idea. It will strengthen the bond between the two of you and give her something to work on as well and she will be confortable in the setting since she has been there before. It will also help you to get to know her more.

Also, I would add that, as you said, she may be under a bit of stress so you don't want to baby her too much when she first arrives because you do not want her to feel like it is okay for her to be stressed. Meaning that petting her in a fearfull state will encourage that state so be weary of that.

Make sure she has a place to call her own that she can go to to calm down and be alone but still see the action from a distance. This will help her integrate slowly into your home and into your pack and allow her to rest if she needs it. Baby gates help immensely with this. She will see the comings and goings but will not be directly in it and it will help her feel more secure.

WOW loving the bed! My pup only has about a 1" think bed in the living room and blankets here and there (Dobes love blankies it seems ). He sleeps on his own futon in the office most of the time tho.
For jackets, you can do a search on the forum, there is an immense amount of posts that have links to different companies and such. The one I have now, actually came from Wallmart.

Have fun!!

Innova and Wellness are both good foods in my mind and I have used both with my dogs. Currently we are on Natures Variety Instinct (Salmon) plus we feed raw one meal per day. Sometimes people like to rotate foods and protein sources. Hard sayin' why Bonnie's owner switched foods...

A good website to check out dog food ratings is Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble.

That bed also looks fantastic. I too like to have thick ortho type beds for my dogs and I would imagine Bonnie will love that bed.

For dog coats, there are so many great coats out there and some of our DT members also make some really nice looking coats! (You may want to PM Meadowcat). Another very inexpensive coat I have purchased several times is this fleece coat from Dover Saddlery. It has fit both my dobes well, held up well, and very reasonably priced.
Rider's International Fleece Dog Blanket | Dover Saddlery

I hope you will be able to find the name of the breeder and reach out to them about what is going on as BRW suggested.

Good luck with Bonnie. I hope things go smoothly for her and she can adjust well and settle into your family with ease. She's a pretty girl.

I'd like to mention that depending on the contract your boyfriend's aunt may have signed with her breeder, you might find yourself in a bit of a bad situation with the breeder if she's not supposed to be spayed; perhaps she's a co-owned show prospect they've been growing out or who has limited showing or who knows. Good breeders most often times have spay/neuter requirements spelled out in the puppy buyer contracts, as well as rehoming requirements for the dog. And if the dog is co-owned with the breeder you may very well be jumping the gun on spaying her and calling her your own.

I'd personally wait to find out if the dog is legally co-owned with the breeder before spaying her or getting too attached. If she's not co-owned by the breeder and you can confirm that, then all is probably fine with spaying and keeping her. But I'd sure want to make certain of that first and get it straight from the breeder.

Hi Again, I was just checking out that bed on Orvis as I really like the looks of it. I read the first couple reviews though and the reviewers mentioned they were disappointed in the base and it was not as thick as the picture implied. I hate how the pictures can be so deceiving!

In case you want to look at some other possible options that are known to have a thick ortho base, I thought I would share these two beds that I have and my dog loves them both. They are about 3" thick ortho pads on bottom, have worn very well, and have removable zipper covers for washing.

This first one is kinda like 2 beds in one. I have the Medium size for my Dobe and use the bottom bed in our family room and use the top bed in one of my dog's crates. I like this one so much, that I just ordered two more of them to replace old dog beds that I've had for years.

This one is also very nice although it's a bit more expensive. I splurged on it a few years ago when I realized essentially every dog Lucy had was a "hand me down" from our prior Dobe. My dog loves this bed and sleeps on it most nights in our bedroom. It's very well made and it still looks like new after few years (other than needing a wash!).

Hi, welcome to the forum.

I am sorry for the loss of your Aunt.

Poor Bonnie, her entire world is upside down now, huh?

Bless you for making sure she's safely spayed, and taking her in to your family.

To help your snip-and-run boy, I'd do lots of two-handlers walks, one of you with Bonnie and one with your boy, just let them be in the same vicinity, but don't force any interaction at all. Let him ignore her until he gets more comfortable around her.

Good luck, hope it all works out smoothly, your new blended family

Welcome to DT from Texas!

I am so sorry it was under sad circumstances you found us, but glad you and Bonnie are here none the less. How tragic for you both to lose someone you love but thankful you found a way to keep her in the family. Some jerk "friend" to dump her at a shelter, huh?

Kisses to Bonnie from Remy and her mommy.

Bonnie is a cutie, thku for opening your home & heart to her ahokie87.
- we bought an expensive LLBean dog bed for our girl, a decade ago...and she only used it for one week
(the leather couch or loveseat and master bed, quickly became more to our puppies liking...lol)

One thing I wish I had gotten was a dog cot for outside lay downs...more comfortable, in senior years.

Hey guys! Sorry for taking so long to reply. We moved into the house and it took forever for Verizon to come out and install the Fios.

Bonnie is now at our house and arrived Saturday evening. It's going so much better than I ever expected! She's really taken to our house and really likes our dogs (especially Winston!). As for Hobbes (the snippy one we worried about), she almost seems to like to provoke him! She'll get down in the pounce position trying to provoke play until he finally snips at her. She runs immediately and he chases her yipping. It completely seems like she is purposely instigating him to try to play. I'm sure that's not the best for Hobbes' stress, but it's a really great sign that she is okay with his behavior!

She is having a hard time on our hard wood floors and the steps are a complete disaster! Once she gets walking, she is fine on the floors. After she lays a long time, she seems to forget she is fine walking on them and will be nervous and not want to take the first steps. Hopefully she'll get over that in a few days. As for the steps, with coaxing we got her upstairs but we had to carry her down. They are hardwood and a little steep, so I think we're just going to avoid the steps until we get a runner, which is a priority that will be done this week. The dachshunds can do them though, so I know she'll be able to once we get the runner. I think the slipperyness of the hardwood floors scare her in general.

She really seems to like Winston and they even lay on the bed together. I was laying with Winston and Bonnie came over and laid on the bed with us. She kept scooting over until we were a three way spoon with Winston in the middle. It was absolutely heartwarming, ha!

We got her a big bed and I've given her a blanket she seems to love. I'll wrap her up in it and she doesn't move out of it, just seems to enjoy the warmth.

She is absolutely terrible on leash and we are definitely going to try to get her into obedience class in the next few weeks. It's very surprising because she has been through several levels of obedience class and goes through all her tricks fine. But on the leash she pulls like a mad woman! I'm thinking maybe she was good with Kristy but she isn't quite used to being obedient with us. That's where classes will come in!

As for the breeder, I found out it is MANAFI DOBERMANS in Georgia. I can't get her website to load, so maybe she isn't a breeder anymore? If you guys at all recognize the name and want more info, I actually have her pedigree and can post it. Just let me know!

Thanks for all of your suggestions! As for food, she is eating Innova for Large Breeds right now. We're going to talk to the people at our food store about switching her to Annamaet just as I really like the brand. It's a small company that sources its ingredients and makes the food in their own facility. With all the food recalls, I feel better using a smaller company. I've actually met the owners of the company at my food stores anniversary day!

Any advice you guys have on anything I said above or additional dobie wisdom is definitely appreciated!

To be more specific on the breeder, her AKC papers say: Anne D Taylor & Sabrina Garret & Connie Alexander. When I googled all the names, Connie Alexander seems to be a show handler. I found Sabrina Garrett attached to the Manafi Dobermans. I know she got the dog in Georgia, and Manafi is listed on the Doberman Pincher Club of America site as in Georgia (DPCA | The Doberman | Breeder Referral).

Both of our dachshunds are purebred, but from rescues and I've never had a "papered" dog, so I really don't know what all the numbers mean and such.

I was full-on-ready to chastize you for an update with no pics, but thankfully you saved the day

She sounds awesome. The story about her keeping her head on your hand all night--so typical Doberman, you gotta love this breed.

Hope the rest of your move and house-set-up goes smoothly.

So glad she is with you safe and sound! I can't believe your 'family friend'. Wow......I hope you let her have it.
She sounds like a doll and so great that she's settling in so well. Great news.
You might also want to change her over to whatever food you want.....slowly. My dobes do not do well with quick changes. Unless you want the plops!

Speaking from another Dachshund & Doberman Mom to another the runners would also be good for your Dachshunds with the long backs it would keep them from sliding around. I'm owned by Buddy a 93#Black & Rust Doberman and Patches a Red Long haired tweenie Dachshund they are 6 years old patches is 4 months older than Buddy. If you have any questions I might be able to help with let me know.

Thank you for being there for this lovely girl in her time of grief. She looks adorable and to have taken to Winston in a big way.

As for the family friend, may she find herself dumped in some grotty home when her kids don't want to be bothered with her.

One thing I will say, keep the pics coming and do hang around, there are new things to learn about our wonderful dogs each day and any issues you have someone may have gone through them before and may be able to help you with them.

Does anyone know anything about her breeder? I looked it up a bit more last night and it seems Manafi is the "newer" Mikadobes. Not sure what that means, but I guess the lady who breeds the Mikadobes is getting older and her daughter (or daughter-in-law) is taking over the family trade and breeding the Manafi dobermans.

Any info about the breeder is much appreciated!

I just found this online, can anyone explain? Veterinary Cardiac Genetics Laboratory :: Veteriry Health Complex :: North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine

It shows three of the Manafi dogs being Positive heterozygous and one being negative.

Wouldn't worry about this test. Has little meaning at this time.
