Unhappy Mabel is from a bad breeder....

and while this is nothing new to me and, i'm sure, though i've never said it, many of you as well (i'll happily point out her conformational and genetic flaws, every dog has some) the true colors of this woman that keep coming on display the more I work for her (depressingly she's a vet) are just at this point to0 astounding not to share. There are several parts to this and mainly after what I point out last my heart is just breaking over and I could use some support. It is very! long but please know it is all very important.

Now I don't consider mabel a rescue, I could but circumstantially the line is blurred, she was a return at 9 months to my boss(full story in reactive dogs, and my intro thread), the shell of the confident puppy she was, i took her home that weekend and well the rest is history, all for the simple cost of a spay and a verbal contract to gain titles...as of now I have little hope she can ever compete in anything. My boss, who has completed behavioral modification training, no she is not board certified, there is a difference, i'm not getting into specifics, is so self involved and believing that she knows all that she says mabel....1.5 years later at age 2.5 now is just "going through a phase" "she'll get over it".....let the forum asterisk me BULLSHIT! mabel sees a very different world than any other dog, her life is not "people are good i like people" she trusts none but a select few and most have them have taken this past year to achieve it or she knew them from work. We have had to and will be off and on for her life i'm sure, medicating her for reactivity. She is overprotective and underconfident and lives her life assuming she needs to get them before they get her.....yet it's "just a phase" and I need to enter her with "doberman appropriate judges"...I don't cheat for my titles thank you. My boss feels I need to make mabel do agility....she hates it, she truly does, jumpers and weaves IF anything would be doable, but she loves obed....thanks but no thanks I wont force my dog to compete in what it hates so that she only becomes frustrated. And though not the only fact left in my bucket I have to end on the fact that we sch tested her (as above, highly protective but lacking confidence) my boss decides saying "it's a shame we spayed her, I should have kept her over her sister" is appropriate....right, a mentally unstable bitch who had a false pregnancy on her first and only heat at 9 months....

Case and point two is sort of a two pointer.....
"she needs a job, you can't have her if you won't work her" she tells me....funny Mabel'ss a couch potato by choice most of the time..guess I stimulate her enough, or wait maybe that's life in general, how do your dogs enjoy being crated 80% of every day? unless their you're two precious seniors, or the lucky top few who actually get to go to agility class one day a week....
You breed dogs you don't have homes for, pawn their care, training, and etc.., as well as most of the adults half the time, off on your staff and do nothing with any of the 5! dogs under 3 years old...you have no time for mabels sister after your "top dogs" yet you keep two last year? and two more this year? You don't even know your dogs anymore...I KNOW YOUR DOGS! the number of times they come to me and not you, that i'm correcting you on which dog is in the yard....it's depressing and shocking. Oh but by all means lets put the cherry on top and plan to breed one of two not even two year old, not at all tested, nor titled, hardly trained bitches with maybe 2 applications in that will probably fall through as usual just because you so desperately want to use your 17 year old frozen probably useless sperm from a past male........round of applause please?

Final point and straw that broke the camels back....Kooper, most of you may have seen my thread about kooper....he was a return too her, he has horrible seperation anxiety, an overwhelmingly sweet personality, and a desperate need to just feel wanted...... I took him home for two weeks...intended longer...as usual to do all the work and get no credit.
I had him crateable, able to go lay down on his own, gaining much much needed weight and functioning normally....she demanded him back so he "wouldnt get to attached" and has fundamentally made him worse than before.
The dog I saw at the clinic today for the first time in two weeks was a shell, he at 28" weighs as much as mabels 24" fine boned sister of a dismal 53#'s....he came to us at 58#, I sent him back at 65#, he should be 80#....
He was covered in sores from the other dogs picking on him, throwing fits in crates as he was only used to 30 min with me, a massively hard point to get through thrown out the window, and he was a bag of bones with a crap coat again, acting very much like he was/is being hit, which I don't doubt for the constant complaining, lack of patience, jokes, and attempts to pawn him off on anyone she makes all day........I spent ten minutes crying and petting him making him realize it was me, the one who cares, who loves him, who should never have let her take him....my heart is breaking right now that I had to leave work...leave him with her...that I even have to work for her. I look at mabel while I write this and cry for poor kooper....i saved her but I can't save him...she won't let me take him, not permanently, not to find him a home myself, she insists on selling him herself and turning a profit....his health, his sanity don't matter....she doesn't even KNOW him, that he loves bones, hates squeaky toys, needs to see you from where he is to feel safe that you haven't left, that he will never go on the furniture..... oh kooper I am so very very sorry, by working so hard to save you i've done just the opposite.

I know this was long, and I can't say thanks enough to those who read the whole thing.... this would be hard enough to work around if I was just a pet person but it's even harder with me coming from a serious pet family, I grew up at shows, i know performance events, I KNOW! dogs and breeding and this....it just kills me, working for her has been life changing and not all in a good way.

She "seems" so good to the public but It's all a lie....she may test and title but she doesn't love those dogs but a select few...the rest well, as much as a person loves a walking paycheck. She preaches on her puppy owners giving them jobs or how things are "just a phase" yet hers sit in a crate and also display reactivity from her poor socialization and inbreeding. At one point long ago she may have been good, she tested, titled, had few dogs, outcrossed, minimally bred, socialized, and had the time for them....ive seen the proof, but what I see now is nothing but dogs who need saving from a self absorbed, money loving woman.....

As I unfortunately still work for her...for now...I will only share the kennel via p.m. so as not to trigger google....the day I quit I will dredge this up and share for all the world to see. Please respect that when posting, if not for me for mabel, if I don't have a job she has no home.

Side note to dobejazz(who so kindly helped make me aware of kooper and get him back to his breeder...oh how good that sounded back then) and any other Wisconsin/Illinois rescues...if (after you find out who she is) you get more of her dogs, for their safety please don't return them, if anything contact me and perhaps I can foster or at least get you pedigree information... they become doomed to a crate until she can scam an upsetting amount of money out of someone and make her quick buck.....I'm so sorry dobejazz...if i had known the level it would get to.....

my heart is breaking tonight dt and I really just need some support possibly more than ever.....

Sorry you're going through all of this, but honest question, why don't you quit? I know you probably feel like you'd be giving up on the dogs etc, but putting yourself through that every day is not worth it. You're not going to be able to change her ways, so you might as well save your own sanity. I honestly don't think finding a decent job to replace that horrible boss would be too hard. But IDK. I can think of at least 3 or 4 dog related openings in my area.

Pickings are slim or I would be, I have several apps in now and just have to wait....if quitting without another job was an option i'd have been gone for months now.
I know I can't change her and the dogs aren't my responsibility, not that it makes it suck any less, at this point it's kooper that just pushed me over the edge when I thought I already was, which just makes going there ten times harder every day....

vets do not always make good pet owners. Sorry this is happening.

Sam 1491: I am so sorry you're going through this, My heart was breaking along with yours as I was reading this unfortunate story, its nice to see that you care so much, and that those dogs, as sad as their life might be, see somone every day who truly cares, don't give up hope, my thoughts and prayers, and all the good energy are with you, you are doing something very honorable putting yourself through this mental torture just so you can see these dogs and make their lives a bit better every day,Hang in there..big hugs from Luna, Wallace and me.

Thank you so much paulina.... I really can't say enough how much words of support mean right now. I'm so lost on if my heart breaks more for kooper or for the fact that one of the two girls who I raised this past year and a half, especially my sweet naomi may be bred while still babies themselves.....tonight it is for Kooper but every day I see the girls I hope they never go into heat again...a silly wish but all I have.

To say I need a new job is really just a massive understatement.

I'm so sorry.

For your sanity, and your soul's sake, get out of there as soon as you possibly can.

If you can figure out a way to help Kooper, too, great, but get out of there, okay?

I can not express how hard i'm trying, just as much as I can't express how much I will "say" to her the day I leave....

I'm working on every plan I can for kooper, it's hard when you don't want her to make any money and continue on...

I'm sorry Sam. Truly I am. I hoped for better for Kooper. I actually was shocked that she took him back and hoped that meant she would do right by him.

I hope that another job shows up soon. And when it does, I hope it's the perfect job - because of everything you've gone through at this one.

If you do have something good to go to, I'd recommend that you consider NOT saying whatever you are dreaming of. From what you've posted, it won't change anything & it will create tension for any future possible rescues from her. She has dogs that need help & it may be that you can scoop them out from under her with a willingness to take some that aren't healthy or improving in her care. I know there is lots you want to say, but please think about whether it's really worth it.

I thought it was because she would to....then the almighty dollar reared its ugly head. At least that sweet boy spent two weeks in loving care where someone did right by him....
My only regret is that Kooper has to suffer to find out that she doesn't deserve them back.... i knew she was terrible but this truly hurts me, if there is any way I get him back, i already know I unfortunately can't keep him, i'll happily be contacting IDR, with me as a foster, if you'll have/can take him.

Thanks kate, I really hope it is too, and i've had the same debate with myself as well....depending on the day i'll try to remain as mentally stable as possible....for the dogs sake.

Sorry you and her dogs are in such a difficult position. Based on your posts, you are an exceptional dog owner and I think Mabel and Kooper are lucky to have you in their lives. Best of luck finding another job and getting this misguided woman out of your life.

Thank you, I'm lucky I have her....she's reactive and crazy and can't be in public but what I get to see from her at home keeps me somewhat sane in all this.... I'll never not feel like I didn't fail him in the end, and i'm ok with that guilt, because at least I know I tried and he knew someone loved him and got to be a real dog, at least for a little while.

Sometimes life lessons are hard...working for her has been beyond difficult but i've grown and learned things, some of which I doubt i've even realized yet.....

Read the whole post. I agree that you need to get out of that toxic work environment. Change is scary, but sometimes it's necessary. Your core, heart, and soul poured out in your post. I feel for you

I'm trying....very hard, all i need is for one of my applications to hire me. I realized so much the past few months that I've been trying to leave since at least august, unfortunately as everyone can see the longer I stay the worse it gets, and it's not just the dogs she treats poorly.

If ever I felt a fraction of what rescue people do...it was today, i've always "rescued" that's how i found and took both my cats, i return lost neighborhood dogs, etc....it pales in comparison to real rescue work and the reality I knew but never really faced...you can't save them all, no matter what you do sometimes.

When you do leave, a couple things to keep in mind--while burning bridges can feel all glorious and righteous in the moment...usually at some future date it all comes back to bite ya in the azz. Especially in small communities.

And--you never know how far someone's tentacles may reach. I'd hate to see one carpet-bombed bridge deny you some other opportunity, someday.

Lastly, sometimes you do have to swallow a bitter pill and bite your tongue, for the sake of rescuing the dogs.

If I'd gone off on the municipal shelters I work with, the way I'd sometimes love to, I'd no longer be welcome, and would not be in any position to help the critters at all.

Just sayin'

Duly noted, appreciated, and more than likely will be the reality...... what few parting words I will have are truthfully already planned out in a calm, short, precise sentence that "I need a more professional work environment where animal health and well being as well as staff sanity is a priority over personal gain and money." boom out the door.......but talking about and pretending I'll get to yell at her sure is a fun stress relief

I think Mabel and Kooper are very lucky to have you. I feel so bad for the environment you have to work in day in and day out with no way to help the poor animals she mistreats. Is there no way you could anonymously get animal control or someone involved, if she has neglected Kooper as badly as you said, letting his health decline after you worked so hard to build it then perhaps she doesnt deserve to own any dogs at all. I know it might seem impossible right now but I am sure there is a way to get them out of her care, and to people who will love them the way they should be loved.
I can sympathize with you in having a reactive dog, though Nexus isnt near as bad as Mabel and is able to go out in public I have to continually watch her if another dog is around, as her reactiveness is toward other animals and thankfully not people. She does have anxiety (not medicated for it) and sometimes paces for 15 - 25 mins around the house. As I said she is not near as bad as Mable but a few tips on how to deal with it when it hits would be great!
I wish you nothing but good luck and hope you find a good job soon!

I am just heartsick at reading your post and wish there was some magical internet pixie dust I could blast your way to help this all work out. It truly is a mess you're in. I will be thinking about you and Kooper and praying you both escape your current situations for a better road ahead.

And on the thought of exorcising the wish-list of verbal assaults in your head, I have always found writting to be incredibly cathartic. Even if it's in a personal journal and nobody sees it but me. Even if they are words only spoken out loud to the curled up ball of dog fur next to me, getting them out of my mind, onto paper or out into the air somehow extracts them a bit from my soul and I feel lighter. I truly encourage you to write your thoughts down and get them out of you in a healthy way. Say all the things you could never say in person because of societal politics.

You have done wonderful things for the animals you care/cared for. While you are beating yourself up for an inability - despite tremendous want - to do more, be sure to commend yourself equally & more for what you could and DID do. You deserve to hear it.

Hugs and kisses to you and Mabel from Remy and her mommy.

Unfortunately his condition though horrible is predominately emotional and not enough for a.c., especially since as a vet they would easily believe any "he won't eat because..." bs excuse. The rest are all in "normal health" physically and i'm not saying she doesn't love them but aside from the top two seniors it's the way you love a car....all based on function and use. I've already saved one sweet older girl by forceably putting her on our website, sadly she made a profit but that girl is now spayed and living the dream!...

Mabel is very bipolar on her dog reactivity, i have to play it very safe but she can make friends....people too but it's just generally highly unlikely there. I'd check out the reactive dogs thread, we share lots of great advice, ups, downs, and etc... Personally I use the B.A.T. method with mabel and have great results.

Not much for writing but I do vent in the car or to my ever so deeply patient friends and bf for whom I have thanked probly a dozen to many times for listening to me bitch and supporting me through this.

As to the bold....thank you, I can't say it enough, it's really a twisted situation i'm in and through the heartache i'm trying my hardest to make sure I do the dogs the one favor I know I can by learning from it.
I'm still trying to save Kooper and I'll do what I can for my sweet boy until the day I leave, the others I know will survive...in a sense, they are fed and have a roof over their head, knowing occasional real love from the staff members, but kooper, he's not cut out for that world by a long shot....

And thought I hated my job. (((((((hugs)))))) I think you should keep a diary of sorts, a log. Each day write in it, for now write what you remember happened with Kooper. His weight before, after and now, sores before and now etc.

I see you are looking for a new job and I'm sending good vibes you find, that environment is toxic for you. Writing will help vent and perhaps you will need it some day. I'm with RFR, when you leave the job don't burn bridges. If you really want to become involved with rescue keep quiet at least to her and carry on. She won't see what you are talking about anyway. You might considering asking for Kooper back if he is a dog you want to have forever in your home, if not...well it sucks but you can't really change it now.

I may just take the time to write a detailed story and keep a log going for the rest of my time on his condition....I really don't want to burn bridges and will put all my willpower into not doing so when I leave, for the dogs sakes, but like you said, i won't keep quite where it maters elsewhere.

I've asked for Kooper back....damn near begged really, pleaded that I'll take him home and train him and his care will all be on my dime, that i'll keep him and she won't have to deal with him anymore (all you do is complain after all..said to myself). But "he'll get to attached" and "he's not free...somebody will buy him". I would never pay her and couldn't what she's asking anyways
