| i just can't believe the muscles that are popping up on this guy. We do some moderate pulling exercises but I never expected him to go from looking like a bag of bones to how he does now in a matter of a little more than a month.
I thank you all again so much for your help and this website in general for all the useful information. U all ROCK! |

| Congrats on your new boy! Thank you for taking him to the vet and getting his health in order. You're a man with a good heart. You can always use Ivomec for heartworm, worms, and fleas. A 50 cc bottle cost around $45 and lasts for 4 yrs or so. |

| We've decided to have Diesel neutered. His old "owner" is upset because he thought that he was going to find somebody with a bitch to breed him with and him get the "pick of the litter". There is no way I'm letting this back yard breeding crap happen with him, making an already bad problem worse. I refuse to contribute to that bs. I apologize. I needed to rant for a minute. |

Good for you x 928347298347298347, and THANK YOU for helping this poor boy. I just wish there were more folks out there such as yourself that were so willing to do the right thing. I love the positive updates!
Also, if his nails are still a little too long or bug him at all, sometimes vets will cut them way back while the dog is under anesthesia for spays/neuters if you ask them to. It sounds like you have already made a lot of progress there, but I just wanted to throw that out there.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for everything you've done for this poor boy.

| I introduced my Mother and Father to Diesel for the first time last night. Diesel did this thing where he charged at my dad, barking pretty viciously so I intervened. Diesel turned away and walked the other direction about 5 feet or so. My dad got down on one knee and put his hand out and diesel chomped down on it and tore about a 3 inch gash across my dads hand. He had to get 12 stitches. I don't know why he acted like that out of nowhere. My dad said it was his fault because he put himself down on his level and reached out to him and says he's okay and will not give up until they're friends.. even saying he's going to start bringing over pupperoni and whatever to give him. My father is 66...had a kidney transplant in 1982 and has been on a LOT of meds ever since. He has very thin skin and bleeds a lot when he is cut. There were no marks on the bottom of his hand so it wasn't like a bite but more like a tear. No bottom teeth marks what so ever.
Any ideas on what happened to make him act like that? He has been territorial and barks at other dogs but what do I do about him biting people? Is this something I should be worried about?
Oh, and will having him neutered make him less territorial?

Edited to add: YES you should be worried about a bite that required stitches. Please keep him away from people until you know that he is safe to be around strangers.

| But isn't everybody a stranger at one point in time? I was and my entire family was. He was fine with all the females he met (2 daughters, wife, mother-in-law) He barked at my brother in law but I put him in the basement right away and now my father.. I didn't and it escalated. Could it be a male thing? Thank you for your reply. |

No one can evaluate him over the internet.

| We could all speculate as to why he acted the way he did, but he does need to be evaluated in person by a behaviorist. Could he have acted that way because of how his prior male owner treated him? Of course. Could just be territorial? Maybe. Either way, for his peace of mind and the safety of everyone else, he should definitely be checked out.
I know you said you'd have more tests done as money was available, but a thyroid test would be at the very top of my list if I were you. Now that he is feeling better, has more food in his belly and meat on his bones, he may act differently than he did before (particularly when approached by strangers). Sometimes a thyroid issue can play into personality changes, so it's worth investigating.

| Well, my father came back tonight to pick up my daughters and make an effort with Diesel again. He brought pupperoni like he said he would. I made him stand at the screen door before he came in to see what the reaction would be. Diesel sniffed and everything was good. Dad came in. I told him to not even look at or acknowledge him at all. Diesel stopped paying attention to him. My dad turned around with a treat and next thing you know, was having Diesel go through his repertoire of tricks. I'm still nervous.... very nervous actually and will find a behavior specialist asap. |

| Be careful who you go to, a lot of behaviorists (even "certified" behaviorists) don't know how to handle people aggression properly. If you have anyone tell you that it's because he a dobe, or a male, or that it can't be fixed, turn and run. I've worked with a number of cases of "aggression" where behaviorists told the owners that the dog couldn't be helped. That was not true with any of those dogs, and none of them have had incidents since then. Truth is it could be a number of things, and without being there to read his body language and see what you saw, no one is going to be able to tell you exactly what caused it. Find a trainer that can and has worked with (successfully, that is) aggressive cases. I'd come look at him if I were closer, but I live in NC =). I'll see if I know anyone around you that could work with him. |

| Hello everybody. It's been a while so I thought it would be nice to update you all on how Diesel's been.
We finally had the money to have him neutered and completely checked out and updated on all his shots. He is in great health. Weighs 82 pounds... he was >50lbs when we saved him.
We worked a LOT with his temper. Took him out of his element and got him adjusted to strangers and other dogs. (Other dogs were never a problem. He would take to other dogs quickly.)
You all have helped me make all the right decisions with him and I appreciate it more than I can express. He went from a scared, overly aggressive dog to a perfect pet.
I'll take some pics and post them soon. |
