| I also have a general maintenance question. How do I go about clipping his nails? I have the clippers but his nails are so black that I can't see the vein. They are so long that it looks uncomfortable for him to walk. |

Dobes are known for their compact, cat-like feet and long nails can cause them to splay and create a ton of pain & discomfort.
There are quite a few threads on nail care, whether you dremmel or clip, that should offer some tips for you if you search them.
(love the popcorn party, looks like he's made himself right at home! ) |

| What a sweetheart! With his nails, you need to take tiny, tiny pieces off the end until the texture inside the nail turns more 'meaty' texture and you start to see a white dot appear in the middle, that's the quick. |

| Hi everybody. Just a quick update. I took Diesel to the vet and got some blood work done along with some other things. His rash is from the fleas at his old house. He has a pretty bad case of tapeworms. Heartworms were negative. His ears were definitely clipped with some sort of scissors. The vet said he can make out scissor marks like overcuts when a child cuts a little too far on paper. Poor boy. At any rate, I bought him some "Natural Choice Lamb meal and rice formula" dog food. Big ol' 40 pound bag.. eheh. Oh, a couple toys and some pig ears / hoofs as well. He was so excited that he didn't know what to do with himself.
When I can afford the other tests that some of you have mentioned / recommended, I will get those taken care of as well and update you on those.
Every day gets better and better not only for him but for me as well. He's my new best bud and he knows it. |

| What a relief he's HW negative!!!!!
Maybe you already know this (and disregard if you do) but I'd take it slow mixing in the new food with his old or he may have some pretty messy diarrhea. It may take his system a bit to adjust to the new food.
Sounds like he's loving life and being spoiled - just as he should be. Can't wait to see some new pics!

I second whoever said take the food slow. Don't switch cold turkey. Start adding small amounts into his regular food and then increase until you've switched. Sometimes, even being careful with the switch, you'll get diarrhea. And sometimes, a new food just doesn't agree with the dog's system, or he's allergic. Just somethings to think about when switching food. Anyhow, glad your boy is doing better. And more pics of the popcorn parties!!!

| ps.
As for cutting the nails. If you are clipping, you can start with just taking the ends off, and each time you do it, get a little closer to the quick (blood). But yes, dobe nails are dark and quite hard.....and not easy to clip.
I dremmel both my dogs. But it's loud and the dog might need to get used to the sound and experience. If you have a muzzle you might want to use it, if you've only had the dog a short while. You can buy dremmels online or a pet store....i think mine was around $40.
Then I turn the paw, pad side up. And do the whole length of the nail, so that you can see where the quick ends and all of the excess nail on the end. You'll have to go over the bottom a few times to see this.
Once you see where the quick ends....then you can dremmel/shave the ends of the nail down, close to the end of the quick.
This will give you the most effective way of cutting back nails right away. Especially if you say that they are long.
You might start with a few nails at a time, so you don't stress him out with the loud machine all at once.
For me, a dremmel is the way to go. Once he's used to is, you can do it once a week.
Good luck!

| I went through what you were going through. I kinda tricked him to not wanting the dog. I knew he wanted her to have puppies( not gonna happen) so i spayed her. When i told him he said he dosent want her back. That might not work for you but another option is, i like to tell all of my friends/associates how much i love dogs and whatnot to let them know, we may be friends but right is right and wrond is wrong. DO whatever you can to save that dogs like. Im praying for the two pits and husky too. What type of shape were they in? |

| I do believe that KC papers don'y mean squat in terms of ownership so I wouldn't concern myself about the old owner having them.
I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure someone can confirm or deny this to be the case. |

| Hello everybody. Just a quick update.... Diesel is doing GREAT! He's gained some weight. No more protruding ribs / hip bones. His diet is regulated and the diarrhea is gone. His nails are trimmed down and walking seems so much easier for him now. It's funny actually.. He has this "trot" or "gallop" like a fancy horse. It's the coolest thing I've ever seen. He is protective of course but all in all he is very well tempered.
As far as his original owners, I got the husband (they are separated) to tell me to keep him. The wife (who had him and all the other dogs) is pretty pissed off but there's nothing she can do about it. He is OURS! WOOHOOO!!
I thank you all so much for your help. I'm going to take some of the recent pictures off of my wife's phone and upload them here for you. I can't believe how intelligent this dog is. He is by far the most intelligent dog I have ever come across and I've had dogs my entire life. I can sense his appreciation for us and honestly, I really needed him as well and I feel like he knows it. |

| Congrats!! He's yours "officially" now! It's so nice to hear a happy story where dogs find the people they are meant to be with!
The trot/gallop is one of my FAVE doberman traits. I call Earl my little pony, cause he trots everywhere he goes. I'm sure Diesel has an extra spring in his step after being so lucky to have found you!
Keep up the great work! This site is going to help you figure out all the crazy things this boy is going to do! |
