| What do YOU do with YOUR dog(s)? One of the things I like so much about this forum is the diversity among the owners of these wonderful dogs. Along with that comes varying interests, hobbies, jobs, etc. So I'm wondering what category each of us falls into with our dogs?
Do you show your dog? Perhaps you both participate in agility or rally or flyball? Dock diving? Or search and rescue? Therapy/service work? Herding? Personal protection? Or maybe French Ring, mondioring or schutzhund? Maybe you're a breeder? Or perhaps your dog is your faithful companion and happy just to be laying at your feet?
You get the idea.
No matter which category we may all fall into, I'd love to learn more about what each of us does with our dogs, so please share!
ETA: I pulled most of these categories from the DPCA website, but added a few as well. If I missed anything, I listed an "Other" box. Please describe what you do with your dog if that's the category you fall under. Thanks!

| My guys are just pets. I really, really wanted to do Obedience and Rally. And I had wanted to show Ripley. There were some issues with registration though and showing wasn't important enough for me to keep him intact, so I ended up neutering him.
And to be honest, I'm really not much of a competition person. I get my nerves too worked up before a show or trial and it's so stressful for me. So instead I enjoy training and working with my dogs, but not really competing. Maybe someday, but not right now. Right now I'm enjoying training and playing with my very well loved, active pets.
Would probably help if there was a training club nearby that I could get involved in and train with all the time to help build my own confidence in myself and my dogs' abilities. But there isn't one within the distance that I can easily get to, so other than taking different 6-8 week course classes (that generally don't go much past novice level for the type of training I prefer), I feel like I have to rely on my own training and hope we don't become the laughing stock of a show. But even so, I just have never been the competitive type. I enjoy just having my dogs as my pets/companions.

| We do Rally/Obedience classes and some beginner Agility for fun & exercise, not on a competitive level.
Rowan has his UKC Ch, which was obviously owner handled and the plan was for him to go with a handler in AKC...if/when he's ready...so I checked both of those.
And today he passed the TDI eval, so Therapy work is coming next! He almost was a SAR dog, but my SO ended up deciding he just doesn't have the time to commit, so that will have to be for the next dog.
This breed is so cool...they can do EVERYTHING!
ETA: Oh, and of course beloved companion...that comes FIRST!

| Great Thread & my vote casted is:
- Obedience / Therapy / Companion Pet ^^^^ My last voted catergory, gave me the most pleasure, BUT the first one set the learning stage, very early on, for past Amy's entire life
- I believe in building the puppy foundation real-real young...the rest is "SoooO" easy than ThkU BenVera, for a most insitefull topic...sure to follow this one, with much interest (like all the rest)...he-he. Re TOPIC:

| More than anything, I've wanted to do agility, perhaps flyball, and obedience... but for now, my pup's just a companion and slayer of demons.

Conformation - Handler
Conformation - Owner
Obedience
Companion
I handled Thor in our first show myself, and after that I used a handler. I have handled both of our dogs in the ring though, when my friend/breeder/handler needed help. The one point I put on a dog was not my own though.
Now that Thor is finished, we went back to Obedience. We have been taking classes for a few weeks, and will be trying for our BN title soon, before moving on to CD.
When Trinket finishes, I would like to try Agility with her, and Rally with them both too. But I didn't add that since we have not started it yet. |

| I have a question. Do you want to know what:
1) we've actually competed in
2) what we are training for, and hope/plan to compete in
3) what we'd like to do eventually, but haven't started training for or competing in yet?
I've done obedience and rally with Ilka, and plan to do tracking and lure coursing. With Leo, my plans include obedience and rally, tracking, and lure coursing. Since she's a GSD, I think herding would be interesting. Nosework and dock diving also sound like fun for both dogs.

| Since DJ isn't quite a year old yet, we have been to a few different obedience classes (basic, Level 2 and Intermediate) and are currently half way through a beginner's basic agility class..just for fun and to build up some confidence. I work with her all the time and my goal is for her to be my wife's service dog. She will already pick up things that are dropped and hand them to us, and she is learning to brace for balance assistance and also help to balance when my wife goes up or down a few steps. We've still got a long way to go, but I am totally confident that DJ will reach her goals.

| Toby first and foremost is a pet. However, he is also my early warning system in case of folk (of a dubious nature) wish to come calling and deprive me of my worldly goods.
I have actually been toying with the idea of trying to teach him to find Truffles, my trainer friend has trained many dogs to find drugs, cadavers etc, so hopefully she will be able to help me with assessing if Toby will be any good at Truffle Hunting.
Oh I do hope so, I love to cook with them not to mention sell them. They are worth as much as gold at times. |
