WalMart's volunteer program

I posted a comment the other day about volunteering for an organization and my employer (WalMart) will give them some money (win-win, right) (never heard a word from them, that's twice I have tried to volunteer for them) Whatever, their loss. But anyway, someone wanted me to put the information on a thread, so here it goes.

WalMart has this volunteer program called Volunteerism Always Pays (VAP). How it works is, an associate who volunteers 25 hours per quarter for a 501(c)3 WalMart will give that organization $250. Our year starts in February so the quarters are different. The organization has an opportunity to make more if more people volunteer. If the associates do what is called an Event VAP then the organization can make anywhere from $3000 to $5000. The organization can also apply for a Community Grant through WalMart Foundation. WalMarts gives out billions a year to non-profits and also donates a lot of animal food as well. So get your local WalMarts associates involved.

Sounds like a plan to me.

Usually I am not a Wal-Mart fan but this sounds like a good deal all the way around. Not only does the organization get your free labor but they also get $10 per hour for that volunteer's time donated to them by Wal-Mart. I wonder if local shelters and rescues just don't realize this or if maybe the program is so new it hasn't caught on. Also wonder if rescues are so busy they may not have the time to train volunteers. Have you contacted your local shelter?

Thank you so much for posting this information.

Not sure if the program is at Canadian Walmarts too, but now that I have this information I am going to ask at our Local Walmart.

Has this program been used at your shelter?

I'm going to contact the local Wayside Waifs here as well and let them know about the program.

i have used it at my local shelter and for 2 rescue groups, transporting dogs to the rescue.

I work for WalMart and I am required to do at least 3 per year since I am in management. I do as many as I can, at least 4, one per quarter.

I'm sorry if it's me you are refering to when you say you posted a comment on here and hadn't heard back! I asked for your email in that thread so I could some more info from you and get you in touch with the group, since that's how we do most of our communicating.

PLEASE don't take that as getting "blown off". I was simply waiting to get that contact info so I could get details, since passing along some ones phone number with vague info about a program I didn't fully understand would not be my ideal way of handling this.

I work for Sam's Club. I volunteer with the local doberman rescue here. They benefit from my volunteering. It requires the organization to simply fill out a little bit of paperwork to verify a few things. I don't see why an organization would turn down free money.

there is no sense in "proving" anything to those that are anti-Wal Mart. Like them, or not, they do a lot of good for the community.

Walmart does actually give quite a bit to charity. They suck to work for, though. Here's a converstaion I had with a manager:

Me (four hours before my shift, mind you): "My son (then about 15 months) has a fever of almost 105, so I won't be in today."

Manager "Can't you just give him something, and come in anyway?"

Me: "Only if you don't mind me getting a call from the daycare, saying he's running a fever, and that I need to come pick him up after I've been here for an hour."

Or another conversation:

Me: "I need to go home. I'm coming down with a sinus infection, and I'm getting dizzy."

Manager: "No, we need you here."

Me: "I really feel like I'm going to pass out"

Manager: "Sorry, but we can't let you go."

Less than 10 minutes after that, everyone was freaking out because I hit the floor, out cold. I used to get a lot of sinus infections, and they finally started to believe me when I said I about to pass out.

I have a friend in South Carolina that applied at Walmart/Sam's Club the manager told him he couldn't hire him because he didn't speak Spanish.....

I work for Walmart Canada - I don't think we have the VAP program in Canada, but I could be wrong. Honestly, they have so many programs that I can't keep them all straight or even begin to know about them all.

I frequently said that if we are truly judged by a jury of our peers, the jury would consist entirely of Walmart cashiers, and anyone we killed would be ruled a justifiable homocide.

Here's a conversation I had with a customer:

Me: "Hi, How are you today?"
Customer: "****crickets****"
Just for some background, I was on an express register (20 items or less), and the woman had her cart to where I couldn't see it.
Me (after ringing up about 25 items): "Ma'am, you do realize this is an express register, for 20 items or less?"
Customer: "These are the only registers open."
Me: "No ma'am, I can see six big registers open on this side."
After ringing up another 25 or so items...
Customer: "These counters are too small."
Me: "That's because they're for small orders of twenty items or less."
After I finish ringing up at least 100 items, she wrote a check.
Me: "I need to see your ID, please."
Customer: "Why?"
Me: "Because we can't take a check without an ID."
Customer very grudgingly hands over her ID, I run the check, and hand her the reciept.
Customer (very dramatically): "I'm never shopping here again!"
Me: "Okay." I was actually wondering if I could have that written in blood, and notorized, but didn't say that out loud....
