I think you're going to hear female, and it doesn't matter what sex you are... I've been doing my reading.

All the research I did led me to a female. As I did not want to deal with the possibility of male to male aggression. Oh and welcome to the forum, I hope you enjoy!!

Male v. Female

Another Novice.

Some say males bond with female humans better, and females bond with male humans better. I haven't found this true in my experiences, but some swear by it. I would say you won't be disappointed either way - but I would stick with a female for your first Dobe. Your breeder that you pick should be able to help you with the decision as well.
Dogs are usually bigger, eat more food, and it is not uncommon for them to be same sex aggressive and more dominant by nature, just harder to handle overall for novices than a bitch.
Bitches are usually smaller, easier to handle than a big male, and will usually not have the same sex aggressive tendencies. These stereotypes don't always hold up, each dog is different. So just know these are only generalities, and don't speak across the board for all dogs, dog and bitches vary greatly on a case by case basis too.

Both require obedience classes, lots of socialization, lots of exercise, a smart leader, etc.

Depends. Intact males can be harder to train. Also depends on the trainer and the individual dog. Young males tend to be in US rescues more so than females.

Maybe it is just my dogs, but my male has not been a hard dog to train. I think for the most part dobes are just smart dogs. They are all trainable. I do think that males can be harder for some people just because of sheer size, but I don't think that makes them any harder to train, just harder to handle if they are NOT trained.

And if you want to see stubborn, I have a few females who can show you what that means too

Honestly, I think it is a crapshoot. I think we could sit here all day and speculate, it all depends on the dog.

But I would say....if you have any doubts....go with a female.

I really think that it depends on the indiviual dog. Our first dobie was a male and I really mean this when I say it - HE WAS THE BEST FIRST DOBIE FOR US. His temperment was just fantastic and there was not a person, dog, cat or child that he didnt like. With that said even though he was pretty good about barking if he heard any one outside (to let any one know that he was there) I really dont think that he had the protectiveness that my Titus has.

I think that it is hard for me to say that males are harder to train than females. Our Jada learned pretty quickly but she also has Titus as a role model and really watched him on how to do things. I love both of my kids and even though Titus is a momma's boy I really could not pick which is my favorite. They both have made such an impact on my heart.

Best of luck and let us know how your search goes.
