FamilyZoo is on a distinguished road
One of the benefits of having a Doberman(s)

Last night when it was dark my wife and our 10 year old son had the 2 yorkies, our westie and Tess outside for a “potty break”. After a few minutes my youngest came in and said he saw someone in the back behind the shop.
I told him it was probably the goat and not to worry about it.
My wife came in and said that the big dogs were barking and that she felt someone was out back.
The entire perimeter of the property is fenced in. Out front, the big dogs are kept in a fenced area that encompasses the entire width of the yard with the exception of the driveway and starts at the road and ends about 70 feet from the front of the house. Behind the house about 130 feet is another fence that runs the width of the yard, 5 feet behind the shop. Behind the shop is the dense wood area of the property that is currently occupied by our goat.

I told my youngest and the wife that it was probably the goat that he saw. He said it wasn’t and she was concerned that the big dogs were barking also.

I go to get a flashlight and of course since I have a 10 year old boy, the flashlight isn’t where it is supposed to be. No flashlight, no me walking and checking this out alone. I head out the front door and turn on the front porch lights. They only light up the porch and are not bright enough to put any light on the front pasture gate. I holler back to my youngest to tell his brother to find a light and get out here.

I make it to the gate and “free the hounds”. They do a complete loop of the house and comeback to me. No barking. I walk back to the front door holler in for my oldest and walk around to the back. I notice that only my male is with me.

Gunny and I head to the back fence and find hundreds of lightning bugs back there. No boogie man, no ninja dressed in black. Both boys show up. Oldest has a small half dead flashlight. I explain to the youngest that it was probably the bugs. He doesn’t think so.

I still can’t find our female Maggie. I start walking back to the front calling her name. Come to find out when I went to the front door to holler for my oldest, my wife took her inside for her own personal security reasons… lol

I never found anything or anyone lurking around. My wife still weren’t at ease so I kept the big dogs around the house. I closed the driveway gate and they had access to everyplace except the goat area. No more issues or concerns.

Its funny how the big dogs have been exiled to the front unless they are supervised, except for times like this.

I have to agree with Sooz, if I had more than one then while hubby was outside with one of them looking for a trespasser I would have the other taking care of me!

I mean someone has to get me the remote, right?

I tend to scare myself too I have myself talked into the fact that there is a boogy man around every corner, under my bed....and I still hate being in the dark with large mirrors. I HATE being in the dark. Weird one, I am....

Zoo - That would freak me out. Even the thought of someone hiding near my house would be enough for me to make sure our gun was loaded and near. I guess I am a bit of a worrier. I really want to move out somewhere where we have some property, but for exactly the reasons you mentioned (woods...plenty of places to hide....very dark) it would kind of freak me out. I spend about 6 months of every year living alone.....so I would have to add 2 or 3 more dobermans if we did that At least there would be plenty of room!

That is freaky. Dogs are great even just to give you a boost of confidence when you need it, not to mention a great deterrant. I dont mind being in the dark unless its somewhere farther away from home but even on my street my mom worries and she always feels better when she knows Strike is with me. He especially aware of everything at night and much more protective. Its his true akita-ness. Knowing how DESPERATELY I want a male rottie, my mom dosnt worry as much when I one day will be out on my own.

Anyone who is up to no good and decides to return to a home with large dogs deserves be arrested for sheer stupidity. I have also heard that goats can be nasty and not sure I'd want to tangle with a goat or a ram. Mind you, I'd rather deal w/ a goat than a Dobe defending his territory. For peace of mind, you might want to have motion-detector lights installed out by the shed. I know they can be a pain, because they will react to a racoon walking by, but at least you'll have plenty of light back there if you need to release the hounds.

I'm on two acres in a semi-rural area. Son is in boarding school, hubby is away during the week. Plenty of day laborers are picked up at the train station to work for landscapers, etc. in my neighborhood. So while they were taking down a few trees, I let Java out in her fenced-in area to supervise the situation for a bit. She didn't bark a whole lot, but she never let those guys out of her sight. After 10 min I called her back in - the fact that she came in immediately at least gave the illusion that she's trained....

I dont own a gun, so the dogs are it. Plan is for little Tess to eventually start Schutzhund for this reason.

That's great that you want to start Schutzhund with her. It is alot of work, but can be alot of fun as well. However, Schutzhund will not teach her to protect you or your property. Schutzhund is a sport, and while it does have "bite work" it is very different than......say......a personal protection dog would be trained. I think it is an excellent venue to teach obedience, and it will also teach you to work as a team. I do think dobermans are naturally a protective breed, but in terms of personal security, I wouldn't rely solely on the dog. Good Luck though, and if you want some links to some great websites to learn more about the sport, PM me.

Now days it pays to be watchful

Seems like crime is up everywhere so does not hurt to be careful I have dogs so they can give me a warning to get my gun out.Hubby does not want an alarm does not want to push buttons???.He would sleep though anything anyway.
