I found the perfect bed for chewers and figured there might be a couple of ya'll who might be interested. The bed is actually secured to the crate with ties and then you install a barrier around the edges with more ties so there is no way for your dog to get the bed in their mouth. Cara was a horrible bed chewer when I left her to go out of town (even just overnight; she's fine if I'm home--silly velcro dog) and this works perfectly. I'd purchased a regular bed from this guy years ago for my previous Dobe and loved it so I figured I'd try this one out. It's a great alternative to no bed or obstruction surgery. His website is Cushionguy.com - High Performance Chew Resistant Dog Beds and Chew Proof Crate Pads..
I've been contemplating one of his beds for a while now.. the non-crate ones now that we're out of crating phase. Do you like his regular bed - which one did you get?
I think the tie down bed is an awesome idea, esp. for these chew-prone dogs!
The regular bed was the Dura Bed. I got it for my last Dobe because she liked to suck (not chew) on anything fabric (she was an orphan pup that I hand-raised and started sucking on everything at about 6 months old). It worked great for her. I got the 4" one and I still have it. It's about 6 years old now and has probably only lost about 1/2" in height. My older dog uses it now since he needs a good cushion. It has held up beautifully and is super easy to clean.
I will probably be getting one of these. Titan just chewed up his "Kong" bed in his kennel last week. He had that bed for a month and then one day just decided to take it apart. Thank you for posting this link.
Our Kong bed also lasted 24 hours. Pet Smart refunded us our money. We just bought the Dura Ruff bed. I left it out...we'll see if it lasts a full day or not.
Buddy has one when he was in his crate worked great but it did not have the bumper around it just tie downs. When I put the crate up I took it out of the crate just slid it into the bet I got him from Target. Its flatter but still a great bed.
No, they come with the bed. That's what keeps them from being able to get to the edges and chew. It's a great system and working very well so far (the real test will be when I go away--I have a camping trip in a couple of months--will let you all know if it survives that).
I use a Kuranda bed for my dog, she is a big chewer. Similar in design to the bed you have but uses aluminum piping around edge. She has left some teeth marks in that aluminum.
I love those too. I'm trying to convince my boss to use these for our physical therapy dogs when we built our new clinic. They need something to lay on, but a lot of them chew and we do laundry 24/7 so those would be great.
