First Heat: Advice and Questions

I've never had an intact female before and I could use some helps and/or links as to how to make sure I keep my female Razzle away from Wyatt while she's in heat... how to recognize the signs. I'm terrified of an accidental breeding. DO NOT WANT!!!

Help a newbie?

I can see a boarding kennel in Wyatt's future.

Haha, that's what I've usually done! I just can't handle the yodeling, pacing and generally being a PITA that goes along with a male being a walking hormone when there's a bitch in season around.

Yea, the noise can get bad. I did a kennel switch off, male in, female out, switch. My dober is in heat right now (boys are fixed) but they are driving me nuts!

Day 1 is the first day you see a bloody discharge. But their vulva will usually swell a bit prior to that, and continue to enlarge for a week or so after the season starts. With some bitches, the entire area under their tail actually will start to enlarge before their vulva.

But just to keep things interesting, some bitches have what's called a silent heat, where there aren't any outward symptoms about what's happening.

Your girlies lady parts will swell a fair bit and after a few days she will bleed. This will last about 10-14 days and after that she will be in standing heat where she is jumpable. 8 days after that generally she should be ok.. but allow 3-4 weeks per cycle to make sure jumpings dont happen.

Yes, every bitch is different. Some are fertile at day 8, some at day 25. Bitches can even vary about when they go into standing heat from cycle to cycle.

Oh fun times ahead of you Peaches first sign was licking a little more than normal and then blood started. Both times she went into heat it happened like that for us. I knew she was going into heat 3 days before her scheduled spay and sure enough that day she started bleeding.

If you have two seperate yards for potty it will really help so he's not running over where she has been. I used the two yards and really things were very calm. The three days she was in standing heat was about the only time I had some limited pacing and yodeling. During the 3 days of standing heat I biked Rex for exercise a couple of times per day to avoid him pacing around outside. I also found that if they could see each other things stayed fairly quiet. There was only one day that I had to help Rex eat a little.

You can give the bitch chlorophyll tablets to help keep the odor down...this can help a bit with keeping a male calm. And some bitches in season just smell rank even to the human nose, so the cholorophyl really can be useful.

I'm going through this now. She's on day 10 since she started bleeding... and she had the puffiness starting before that, so I knew she was coming into season.

My question also... seeing as it's her first.... at what point will she stop bleeding, and will I be able to have her run around without diapers on?

Oh... and she has become the biggest suck in the world. Belly rubs are her favourite now... and it appears that she thinks she can get closer to me during the night by trying to climb inside my skin... if she pushes up against me hard enough.

Two things I'm losing my mind on...

1) She stands at the door and whines and barks to go outside. I take off the diaper and let her out... then she stands there whining to come back in. We've done this a few times.

2) The licking... she licks everything, constantly. tries to lick herself through the diaper, constantly cleaning her legs and paws, and anything else she can lick. It's not that bad... it's just the constant incessant sound... slurp, slurp, slurp... arggh.

That will make a big difference, especially if you start that from day one so he doesn't get a good sniff. I put Tara out in my big yard and Rex out in the smaller one for this reason. Rex could safely be exercised on the bike, Tara was too young for biking and more importantly you don't want the female in heat out where strange dogs could run up to her. I'm lucky in that my dog yards are surrounded by my horse fields so no strange dogs can get next to the dog yards. Even with that I watched carefully when she was out and especially when she was in her standing heat.

Just be 100 no 200% positive that Wyatt, can't dig in, dig under, climb in, break through (even a window), etc. You might be amazed at what some males will do to get to a female in heat.

I use dog runs also. It is an indoor/outdoor covered building with cement poured and chain link fencing with a barrier with a double door system. There is absolutely no way a dog can get in or out of it. There are 2 more gates between the yard and the kennel run also. The gates have cement poured so no dog can dig out of the yard also. If I had a climber, I'd put up coyote rollers.

Another question...

Is it normal for them to destroy the things they love when they are in heat... 1st heat... any heat??

Diamond has toys that she has had her entire life that she just won't destroy... oh yes, she has had her share of destroying things... lest we forget the BlackBerry she ate... but there are things she won't destroy.

Since she has been in heat, she has actually shredded a few of these priceless (to her) items... that I never thought she would.

She has had a Bad Cuz that she never put a mark into, but played with it for hours. She now tore the feet off it and the tiny little horns on his head.

She had a treat ball... shredded it.

She has a rubber baseball that she played with... now trying to chew through it with a vengeance.

Her 2 lovable stuffies... she now chews on them like she wants to rip their heads off.

Is this normal behaviour? I mean aside from the barking, whining, overly affectionate one minute, and not wanting anything to do with me the next, hormonal stuff.

Storm was a bit swollen under her tail-- (I'm reading this bc I'm wondering if she's in heat too).. As I said in my thread, she goes to the vet tomorrow- but I'm curious--- if she was in heat would you see blood and little red specks in her urine too? It's not every pee, just every once in a while. She is licking herself alot more and she is a bit puffy--- (under the tail first, as I said)

It's good we can all help each other out!

I'm guessing that you're not far off. Diamond started to get "puffy" like that about a week before she actually started. Then she swelled up considerably, started dropping blood spatters when she walked... and then we put on diapers.

I would assume that you're up for this shortly. Good luck with it... It's been tolerable so far... but as I said, the licking, and whining are the worst of it. I'm 2 weeks in and hoping the next week goes by really quickly.

rainey is on a distinguished road
I also need advice. My 7 month old dobie has been swollen for about a week. Now she is keeping her tail down. No blood-occasional yellow discharge. She is scheduled to be spayed this upcoming Thursday. Is this heat or could it be an infection?. Any advice will be much appreciated.

Go get her checked out by your vet. If it is an infection, or if she is going into heat, you will probably want to postpone the surgery, if you can.
