Road Trip

We went to visit our friends in Gulf Breeze, FL this week for 8 days, and initially, we were going to board the dogs but we couldn't do it...not for that long, so we said the heck with it and after getting our friend's blessings, we took both dogs along.

This is the longest road trip Mocha has ever been on by far (total driving time almost 12 hours due to 3 separate accidents ahead of us on I65). She whined from time to time from having to be cooped up for so long but for the most part, she was a real trooper and kept that smile on.

We stopped at every rest stop and let the dogs go potty and stretch their legs, and made it to FL fine after a long, long day.

Her royal highness decided she could lay BY the pool, but she won't go any nearer to it, not for all the treats in the world.

Thank goodness we had 3 days of beautiful weather before the outer fringes of tropical storm Cindy sent clouds and rain our way, but it looks like the sun is peeking through the clouds again and we should have a few more nice days before it's time to leave and head back to the salt mines.

Nope. I tried, but she looked at me like I was nuts for even suggesting it. We didn't get a chance to take her to the beach yet; there are only a couple of "dog friendly" beaches here (seriously?) and the weather stopped cooperating a few days after we got here.

Are you back already? Hope your trip is/was fun. Both the trip and the visit, I mean. :) So pretty pretending she will go in on her pool float.

Anyway, just a comment for anyone who might be reading this--If I plan to have my dog anywhere near a pool, even if they don’t want to go in, I put them in the pool on purpose a few times to show them where the steps and the way out are. i repeat this until they head for the “exit” right away, without me prompting or calling them to that area.

You never know if a dog may fall in--and they can’t get out by the side of the pool on their own. Even if you are there and call them over, they may be so panicked that they keep scrabbling at the edge of the pool and won’t come to you.

I remember with my last girl, I let her out in my parent’s yard (familiar to her, totally fenced, with a pool that she was...uh...visually acquainted with--NO WAY she was going in on her own!) at night for a potty break. She came back soaking wet. Maybe she jumped in after something, or fell in in the dark (or went in on her own--yeah, right). I was at the door, but I didn’t hear her go in. Anyway, she knew how to get out by herself because I had shown her where to go.

We're here till Saturday; we went to Ft Pickens and I got about 1,000 Osprey pics, still hoping for some sunrise/sunset pics if the darn weather cooperates!

I never let Mocha go outside without supervision due to her proclivity to eat anything colored green, but, that's a really great idea and I may still do that, mainly because I want to see her reaction to being in the water lol. It may not work out well because even at the steps, the water is about 2-3 feet deep and she wouldn't be able to stand.
