I was asked by a couple members to post ongoing updates on my gal that I rescued. This will be her board!

I immediately decided to give the animal control facility a call - multiple calls were made, emails sent -and I finally determined that my best shot of walking away with a Dobe was to just hop in my car and drive the 4.5 hours, so that's exactly what I did. I've been searching for a rescue dobe for quite a while, have researched the breed like crazy, and was right at the point of putting a deposit down on a pup when fate intervened... When we arrived at AC I was told to fill out an adoption agreement and they would see if they had any dogs left. We waited about 15 minutes then another person came in and said all of the Dobermans were gone. Super disappointed, but also happy that so many people had come forward to help them, we decided to roam around and look at the other dogs when another worker announced that there were 9 dogs left. 8 females, 1 male. We walked around to where they were being kept - 3 in a kennel, 5 in a massive enclosure, and the male was on a leash with a person.. I first walked to the kennel, glanced, walked down to the enclosure where all of the dogs -except one older female- were hiding in the tall grass as far away from people as they could get.. Walked back to the kennel and watched the girls interact. 2 were laying quietly on the ground and one girl was watching everyone pass by.. when I walked up, she calmly approached the gate and stuck her nose through to sniff me. That was my girl. The skinny, scarred, overbred little lady with the sad eyes. We went into the office, took pictures, talked for a while, and then we were on the road again. She never made a peep in the car - even though we got lost and ended up being stuck in the car for 6-7 hours. Ack!!

Once we finally made it home she refused to walk. She was petrified of the stairs and of my wood floors, but she found comfort in her crate and slept through the night with only a couple short protests.. The next morning we went out and walked up and down the street a little - the wind blew, leaves rustled, and she dropped to the ground again.. Shortly after that she finally went to the bathroom - and passed an entire collar, buckles included.. (Pictures available if y'all are interested. x_x)

Initial vet visit revealed that she is heartworm negative, but filled with whipworms. She weighs 46lbs, and the vet guesstimated that she is around 3-5 years old based on the tartar build up on her teeth - but when I pointed out that she appeared much younger than that he double checked and noticed, despite the plaque, there is very little wear on her teeth.. Who knows. It's very obvious that she has had several litters of pups. In the waiting room she was very concerned when the puppies beside us began crying and she immediately approached them to comfort them, licking their ears and sniffing them gently... And while she hasn't exactly warmed up to me, she is very fond of my one year old daughter.

This is my Clovers story. She is still not "mine" - she's basically a ward of the state - but I'm hoping one day she will be all mine.

Hi there. I am glad your rescue is doing well considering. We received two females from the rescue..one blue (Caroline) and one black (Analee). We had to rush them to the vet yesterday due to concerns about dehydration but they have had a medicated bath now, better hydrated, and are hw- and no worms. Both have bad teeth and the poor babies are so traumatized that they are afraid to go outside.

Please continue to post updates so we can compare notes and tips.

Thanks
