Winter isn't always that bad...plus, we have a nice, woodburning fireplace, so that is fun on cold days! In winter we can always stay in :)

Hi MeadowCat!

Heat indexes are irrelevant to dogs. They don't sweat..... The absolutely worst problem that short haired (dark haired) dogs like Dobermans have in excessive heat is solar gain. Sun.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_gain.

They need to stay out of the sun. Since they can't mitigate their body temperature by "sweating", when they become over heated, they simply need to relax, in repose, until their body temperature does back down to a healthy one. Think wolves sleeping in the height of the day, even though they are not nocturnal.

I am sure that you know this, but many folks don't realize that dogs can't deal with heat the same way humans do.

Yes... They can pant, which helps deal with over heating to a certain extent. But that ability to dissipate heat is a literal drop in the bucket compared to how we, as humans, deal with major corporal over heating.

It is amazing to me, how many folks (not you... please don't think I am addressing you.) are so ignorant with a dog's susceptibility to heat distress.

Yeah, I know...actual temps of 95 plus...the humans were miserable, the dogs were miserable...we only went outside for maybe 10 minutes as needed for potty breaks :) Last night after dark it had cooled enough for Sypha to get her first walk in days (Richter was fine without, but she was feeling the effects of being cooped up!) It's finally cooler this morning, thank goodness. Dogs played happily!

I'm not a fan of summer...give me year 'round fall! :D

100 degrees actual temperature her in MO today. Like most of you, we don't go walking until the sun is down and then not for long. Max does play in the yard though; he romps around for a few minutes and then he wants to go back inside.

He just had a cool bath and now he is on the couch right under the A/C vent......his favorite spot these days.

Triple digits in PA today - again. All week they say. My lawn is brown and crunchy! My air conditioner has been on for weeks without a break.

I watch Ryder closely when outside. Many times, when he doesn't come to the door after a few minutes,I check on him. In all this horrid heat, what is he doing? he is lying out in the middle of the yard in the full sun! I freak out.
He acts like he is enjoying it. Ugh.

As much as I dislike shoveling snow, these Philly summers are making me think of winter.
