I believe that he could be purebred. I have seen a few Dobes like this. One belonged to a member on another forum, and one turned up in the local Doberman rescue. Both of those ones had cropped ears and sure looked all Doberman, except for the strange markings. Dobes can be born with white patches, missing markings, crooked markings... I don't think it's a stretch to say they could also be born with markings that "bleed out" too far into the body color.

Genetics are a funny thing and I have seen purebred Labrador that was black and tan. :) Strange things happen.

It APPEARS there was a lurker in the woodpile somewhere in his pedigree. Everyone could legitimately THINK their dogs were purebred, but somehow, some stranger slipped in without being seen, or acknowledged<smile>. Regardless, love him as he deserves to be loved, and enjoy him every day you can. He's a handsome dog regardless of purebred status!

^^^Agreed. Multiple males can breed a bitch.
Yes, it's entirely possible that, while the bitch was deliberately bred to another Doberman, she was bred by another dog, as well. I had a dog that was the only mixed breed born into a litter of Dobermans. She was a really great dog.

If you want, you can contact the AKC, and dispute his parentage. In that case, they will contact the breeder, who will have to provide a DNA sample of the supposed sire. Of course, if it doesn't match, your guy's registration would be cancelled.

Otherwise, just love him for the dog he is.

Reputable breeders in TN ?
Are you interested in Euro working lines or Euro show lines? They are quite different. Working line dogs tend to be smaller, and can be quite a handful. Show line dogs tend to be heavier, blockier, and IMO, coarse looking.

And frankly, your guy, at only 11 months, is still very much a puppy. I wouldn't get another until he's a least two years old, and more mature.

As for breeders, if you are interested in Euro line dogs, checking out the United Doberman Club's breeders list would be the best place to start. UDC Breeder Directory Some of them are incorporating Euro dogs into their breeding programs.

Remember folks, purebred does not mean well bred. He could be purebred. If his father was a Doberman and his mother was... that doesn't mean he need look like one. I have seen so many purebreds of a lot of breeds that look so different that I am no longer surprised at this stuff.

As long as you love him, who cares? I wouldn't support that breeder again though.

He may or may not be purebred. What matters is that you love him back the way he loves you for what he is. Our last dog was a Lab mix, we had her for almost 15 years and cherished every day with her.

One thing.....get rid of that terrible collar.

What M&D said ^^^^^

At he risk of sounding like a hypocrite, one really needs to be aware of the serious potential downside to running a two male household. I have done it and do today.

Still... unless you are completely on top of your dog game, it is something to be avoided. If you want the downside, you may PM me. My issues have already been laundry listed on DT.

Even under the best of circumstances, it introduces an entirely new perspective into dog ownership.

With respect to size, if your Jager is as you described, he is right where you should want him to be. He will probably 'muscle up" somewhat over the next year.

A two male household wouldn't be fun IMO. My b/f has a half euro working lines male and I have a half euro show lines male puppy. Very few incidents really, outside of having a typical annoying puppy. I would NEVER trust them alone even though his male is the least male aggressive dobe I've met. It only takes one incident to leave you with a scarred dog with a long night at the vet.

A gay couple just moved into my neighborhood with a pair of dobermans. Each guy "owns" one of the dogs. One is an intact Euro male from working lines. The man went to Europe and got his puppy personally. I do not remember where from. The other is a cut/neutered American male from show lines. They walk them around the neighborhood and I've never seen dogs so well behaved. The Euro's owner did say that it was challenging having both together but it was not unmanageable.

I'll try to get pics to help show a good comparison. As mentioned, they are both the same height. The Euro does weigh a little more but for me the biggest differences are: Euros has a blockier/wider head/snout. He's broader and his hindquarters are thicker. He also has a deeper rust color. The American is more stream lined. I was able to tell the difference from about 20' away. Edit: Neither better, just a little different.
