Toro's Vet Visit

Hey all,

just thought I'd let you know that "little" Toro went into the vet yesterday for a deworming and vaccination, and weighed in at 50 lbs. Vet says he is looking good, except she noticed a very small patch of missing hair on his shoulder and mentioned that he might have mites, which she said is common in dogs his age. She basically told me to keep an eye on him and return if more spots appear.

Otherwise, he's a happy healthy dog. Oh yeah, no mention of any limb deformities! Thank God.

Yeah, demodex (the mites your vet was talking about) is fairly common in puppies in general--all dogs carry demodex mites on their skin as part of the normal fauna--occasionally (it is thought) when stressed or when the immune system just isn't keeping up with the growing dog you'll get a hairless patch (it's where the mites who live in the hair follical) have increased in number enough to chew enough hair off to make a slightly motheaten looking patch.

Most pups own immune system will take care of it--but as your vet said if you see more patches there are treatments for it.
