How much did you pay for your dobie?

I was just wondering. I saw a post that stated "if you only paid 600 I would worry" How much did everyone pay for there babies???? And how much is too much and visa versa? I think that it really depends on if you want them for family pets or if you want to show them... What do you all think?

I'm not going to say what I paid or have charged, but in Ontario, for a dobe from a reputable breeder you are looking in the $1500 to $2500 range. Now, if the budget is $600, then you are looking at the byb with no testing and no registration of their dogs.

I don't have one yet, so I won't vote- but if I get one through the rescue near me, it will only cost $225. Granted, there's a good chance it was from a byb/mill in the first place with no testing/registraton, but to technically answer your question it's under $500 for an awesome pet!

In Alberta you are looking at $1500 - $2000 for a "pet quality" dog and $2000 - $2500 for a show prospect from a reputable breeder. I got Obie as a pet.
Back in the day I looked at some BYB's (before DT and becoming more enlightened) and they sell for $1,000 but not cropped/chipped/tested. To ear crop here is $500 to $750.

I realized if I wanted a cropped dobe it'd cost me about as much to buy from a reputable breeder than to buy from a BYB and crop myself.

That's how it is here too.
I went through a BYB (I hadn't purchased a puppy over the internet, ever. I had purchased 2 parrots with GREAT outcomes. I thought it was buying from a kennel in TN at the time. Turns out to be a BYB. I went thru TN because dogs seemed less expensive from other states (PET quality). Everything is expensive in the Bay Area).
I paid $575 for Hope. Fire was "free" due to illness (supposedly) of the breeder. Now I think it's because she's bowlegged & crooked toed (fixing themselves as she grows, the vet thinks she'll be OK as an adult).
We paid $250-ish for shipping them to us. Then we then paid $4000 in medical bills to save them from parvo.

I believe we've already had this discussion? I refuse to pay anymore than $1500 for a puppy from a breed with a multitude of health problems. I expect both parents to be fully health tested, temperament tested and titled. It is hard for me to understand paying $2500 for a puppy? I also don't really understand charging much more for show quality versus pet quality - it doesn't cost more to raise the show quality puppy. The most that I've paid for a puppy has been $1200, if you add shipping, my cost was $1500.

Winston was $75, but he's not from a breeder - he was rescued. Keira was $1200. We bought her as a pet, but that didn't influence price. Her breeder charges $1200 for all of her puppies - pet or show. I think that's a pretty good price, considering all the costs involved in breeding Dobermans. Between the cropping, docking, health testing, general litter costs, etc. I wouldn't feel comfortable paying any less than that for a Doberman from a breeder.

My Tollers, on the other hand, cost me $1250 and $1400. I hated paying that for them, as I don't understand how those prices are warranted in the breed. There's no cropping or anything expensive involved really aside from health testing of the sire and dam, and general litter care costs. But oh well, they're my breed of choice, and I had no other option than to pay that much.

All of that said, I won't ever pay more than $1500 for a dog of any breed I don't think.

I paid $300 for Quentin. I had never bought a dog reg with the AKC. I really believed if they were registered, then they could not be from a BYB. I know better now of course, after my DT education.
I paid about the same for Peaches and she is from a Rescue.

The New York, north east the dobes go for lots!!!

A good Dobe from a good breeder goes anywhere from $2,000 up to $3500.00
And if you buy a bitch, usually they get back a pup or two if breeding

$1500 here, just for the pup himself.
And I'd gladly pay it again, knowing what's involved in producing a litter from a reputable breeder.

I paid $1800 for Ramsey. The breeder had held her back for show.. then released her to us. So in reality I think we got a deal on her. She certainly has shown her quality to us even though she is only 6 months old.

I've always thought that you can get a good puppy without having to pay thousands of dollars too, but I don't know if you're using the best examples for your argument.

First of all, I think it depends upon what has been done before you pick up your puppy. It's not cheap to breed Dobermans. After you add in all the expenses (vet checks, shots, dew claw removal, tail dock, ear crop, etc...), your looking at quite a bill! Not to mention, breeders often times have to pay for a quality stud.

You may not be able to justify paying $2500, but I personally think it's relative to how passionate you are about dogs and/or your income.

For the record, I paid $1200 for Ramsey and I wouldn't sell her for a million!

When I got Louie his tale and his ears were already docked, with no papers. He was 200$ Wow- It sounds the farther north you go the prices go up! But then to get his ears done was 350$. Although he has no papers thats okay because he will just be a family pet. I met both the parents and a sister the breeder kept...Temperment was VERY good

It's called supply and demand. There are many, many wonderful puppies who are perfect family companions, and generally sell for an average price. There are fewer puppies with good parentage and/or correct conformation who have the potential of being a good representation of the breed. A puppy, who has good conformation and comes from well bred, health tested and temperamentally sound dogs, will naturally cost more because these pups have a better chance of reaching this potential. But absolutely superb quality pups who are stunning to look at and have many healthy champions in their pedigree are few and far between. These are the puppies people look for when they are serious about winning. These are also the puppies that are the most in demand for a breeding program. People who are very serious about promoting the wonderful virtues of this breed will stand in line for such a puppy, and pay accordingly. Supply and demand.

I'm not saying that if you pay more for a puppy that it is automatically better than someone’s puppy who paid less money. There are countless Dobermans who are wonderful, beautiful, healthy dogs, whose parents had few, to no champions in their background, and whose owners paid a reasonable price. These dogs most likely came from a first-rate breeding program in past generations. There are also many common, unhealthy dogs whose owners also paid a reasonable price because they didn't know any better. Generally though, these puppies are the "bargain" puppies, and attract many buyers. The best breeding can’t guarantee a perfect dog – no such thing anyhow. But a well bred dog whose breeder is conscious of all aspects of improving this wonderful breed, will always have a better chance of good conformation, health, and solid temperament. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that the best quality puppies will always command more money.

My red boy was $75 from the HS. Zeus was free since he was not technically adopted from a rescue group, although the rescue helped to place him.

I agree. I dont think that a good dog should be based on how much you paid for it!! For the record, I paid $500 for my girl! And she is the best damn dog that I have EVER had!!! Even with her annoying whining spells, that apparently ALL dobermans have. And if I have learned anything from reading a mojority of these forums...its that basically ALL dobes are the same. They all have the same issues...in both health and personality, they are all vocal, energetic, protective, elegant, loyal, loving companions...whether they are "show" or "pet" quality! On that note, I have seen several dogs that were "pet quality" that appeared superior in confirmation than some of the "show" dogs that I have seen. I have been to many dog shows, and several of them have been Dobe, tho I am no judge, and wouldnt be considered to have a "trained" eye. Thats just my own opinion from my own observations!
Even tho mine has AKC papers, I dont think that papers justify the quality either, in that they are just that...P-A-P-E-R!! Any breeder could lie on paper, anyway, and unless you plan on taking your dogs to a strictly ruled show, then papers dont matter. What good does it do those of us that have Dobies as companions or family pets to have papers anyway!!??
I wouldnt call my girls breeder the best in the world...but she had her tests done, and does have paperwork to prove it. I dont see why her pups werent as expensive as most, and apparently considered cheap to all of you.. other than the fact that the breeder didnt do the ears, but she did do the shots, wormer, tails, and declaws...and all is well, because I dont like show cropped ears, which, believe it or not, all of her dogs had. I tried to contact her later, only to find out that she died of pancreatic cancer a few months ago. I guess that explains why she wanted to make sure that the remaining pups were placed in homes!!!
Honestly, I think I would rather pay the $1000 or more for a breed that isnt subject to so many health issues! Im glad I didnt pay that much for mine! I am in no way criticizing the breed, I love my girl...and I have always admired Dobermans. But I do have another puppy that I found on the side of the road, and she is much better behaved, even tempered, and all around an awesome dog....and I didnt pay anything for her! I dont see how it is fair to criticize us who didnt put a huge dent in our budgets for a dog! I understand that they are great companions...members of the family...whatever...but still, just a dog!!

So sorry to here that, but I bet it was worth it!
