Athena's getting her ears cropped right now and we're going to shop for some supplies to take care of her ears.

I have a couple of questions.

First, how often should we clean her ears (w/peroxide) and how often should we apply ointment to the edges? This is for both before and after the sutures come off.

Also, if YOU were going to your local drug store to buy supplies for aftercare, what would you get?

I've read that "Zonas" tape is the "standard" around here, but will regular "Athletic Tape" work?

i have no idea about the suture stuff since lexx's were done by the breeder, but I can tell you that Zonas tape isn't available up here so i used normal athletic tape that breaths... but it ripped off a lot of hair.

Use rubbing alcohol, not peroxide. That was my mistake. He had dissolvable stitches and I picked the scabbing off nightly (after softening it) But I applied Neosporin to the open edges after cleaning. Make sure you're not pouring any liquids into the ear by accident, if it sits around it could cause infection. I had to order my Zonas tape online, a lot of people use Coach tape. I would be wary of using any tape that is TOO sticky. It could cause major skin irritation. The way I tape Kaleb's ears, he's not even losing hair. (Though, some of his hair has yet to grow back from gluing his ears to the top of his head)

I don't do anything at all to the cut edges. All I do is put a clean "bonnet" made of a sock on their head every day.

I prefer Zonas tape, but any type of athletic tape that's air permeable will work.

I would NOT use peroxide on her ears, I heard it tears tissue. The best thing you can do it not mess with her ears at all until they are COMPLETELY healed.

When I got Suri, he ears were over her head. I will post some pictures when I can. Patty Edwards did her ears and I think her standard procedure is putting ears over the head after cropping.

Don't use peroxide. It actually kills living tissue. You can apply Neosporin to the edges to keep the scabs moisten and they fall right off.

I use Coach tape from Walgreens and it is not too sticky at all, but sticky enough to do the job.

Also you will not need to worry about TAPE for atleast a week or so. Let those ears heal completely.

I didn't do anything to the edges either. I was instructed specifically not to,actually. I coudn't find the Zonas tape here either. I used regular athletic tape. I had unisolve to take the tape off and didn't lose much hair. After my unisolve was poured out I used Goo Gone and it did just as good a job. It's much easier to get! I cleaned the inside of the ear with alchohol.

lots of neosporin.
we also used anti itch cream for the exposed edges while they healed.
rubbing alcohol for later.
ear powder for posting later.
try and get Zonas tape or equivalent - standard athletic tape is too heavy and doesn't breath as well.
