Rebuilding a room for my new Doberman

I'm rebuilding our laundry room this month in an effort to make things better for our new puppy that we're expecting in December. I'll be adding another dog door so the dober can get directly outside from the family room instead of through the two doggie doors through the garage. I'm also going to tear out the big sink and install some kind of a dog washing station.

Does anyone have experience with this?

POWER PET FULLY, AUTOMATIC PET DOORS

Just curious if it's a reliable solution. It looks to be one of those ideas that's great in theory but in practice?

Also does anyone have experience with good dog washing stations? Wonder if their are specific solutions or do I need to create something?

Thanks.

Can't help you out with any advice. I'm just here to wish you luck working it all out. Post some pictures for us when you are done.

A new puppy--now how exciting is that Bags? Congratulations.

The Automatic Pet Door?--the biggest problem for me is that the dog has to wear a collar with the activation device--you've never lived until the other dog in the house removes and chews up the collar. I know this model has all sort of fancy settings so that you can make it manual only or in only or out only but when it comes to dog doors the simpler they are the better off you are.

I'll also add here that it's been years since I was at all comfortable with the idea of having an access arrangement so the dog could go in and out as it pleased. Even in the nice areas I've lived I don't leave dogs with access to the yard unless I'm home. Just plain too many things that can go awry.

Dog washing stations? Check the libraries--there are books that deal with kennel facilities including grooming areas and dog wash set ups. I don't have much experience with bona fide dog washes (even though I worked in a kennel at one time) and have always bathed Dobes in the bathtub--using a $20 shower attachment from one of the big box hardware stores that had an off/on switch for water and a decent spray head. I dry them in the bathtub and then toss the wet towels on the floor and let them jump out of the tub.

The best dog wash for big dogs at the kennels I've seen was one that looked like a shower stall--except that it was raised about a foot--fully surrounded with a drain in the floor. Had an oversized sliding door on one side and built in hand held shower head with on off flow control on the head.

So tell us about your puppy--male or female? Has it been born yet or will it be soon? What color--or do you know yet--when is the arrival scheduled (at your house?)

Even my biggest males have done fine with a large--I don't think you'd really need to go to a super large for any sort of a dog door.

I agree with dobebug. I think dog doors are way neat, but I would only ever have one connect to an outside run.

Great advice I won't do an auto door. I'm re-thinking the whole wash station thing. Requires too much room and I'm four blocks from a great self wash place. I'll use the bathtub approach that you describe too. I'm going to create sort of a mud room type of thing instead. (Rains alot here)

The door will go straight out to the very secure dog run and the dog run can has access to the backyard. Kinda cool.
