| | Alpha | Would you do it again. I was wondering?
Have you ever adopted and adult dobe would you do it again, or would you go for a puppy next time.
In a situation from a breeder you like.
for example a retiring bitch or stud, health tested, championed etc. etc.
What to you were the pros as apposed to a puppy. |

| In a heartbeat - without a doubt - I would go back to rescue, and I continue to do so. I have had 4 dobe rescues so far (and a 5th non-dobe rescue), and I am slowly putting out feelers to get my next one in a year or so tentatively.
Pros?
- no housebreaking in most instances - Bowie, Willow and Tyler all came housebroken. Rah needed a little lesson on lifting his leg in the house, but he also came housebroken
- Ready and ripe to learn - we didn't have to go through stages where they had to be "puppies" and couldn't do things - they were ready to go train, go on hikes, go on trips, etc - and have manners immediately. At some points in her life, my puppy was simply too young to do some things - I could take her along as a training expedition, but sometimes it wasn't convenient.
- I could leave them immediately for however long I needed to. With berlin, I felt almost attached to the house since I couldn't leave for over a certain amount of time because as a little one, she was only able to hold it so long. All my adults were good for hours straight off the bat, so I was able to have a semi-normal life.
- I knew what I was getting - what I saw was what I got. For the two that came from actual certified rescue and not just a shelter, they came thoroughly temperament tested and they were dead on.
I'm a huge fan of adopting adult dogs
I could go on, but I have to go to work!

| | Alpha | I think it's a great way to get a nice dog who is hopefully housetrained. I also think it's a great thing for a breeder to do, to place their "retired" dog with their own family...with all that attention :-) Are you looking at doing that?

| I will second EVERYTHING that doberkim said
we only adopt adults in this house. Puppies are cute and all but what a PITA!
I like knowing what I've gotten myself in to...
my last 3 dogs have been adult rescues, a beagle/pointer mix who lived to be 18, a shepherd hybrid who was ripped from my heart at the age of 8 and now Tucker who's closing in on 8 too...
each one a special needs dog and each one a wonderful addition to our home. |

Very well said
Casper is my 5th rescue - I'll always adopt an older dobe for all the reasons Doberkim mentioned

| I have had 4 adopted dobie's and all have been great dogs. I don't regret getting any of them. And I think it is a great way to go. With working full time it is hard to have a puppy. |

| I don't have a doberman, but I did raise my 3 dogs from puppies. Also I've had 5 or 6 foster dogs in the past few months and I have to say that the foster dogs, despite their rough pasts, were SO much better behaved than my spoiled dogs! From now on I will only adopt... Puppies are too much work!!! |

| yes! i would rescue an adult dober again in a flash! Kane came here at est 10-11 months old.hes had his share of issues, but i'd do it all again....just because of the sweety he is.
pros for an adult rescue.......... less puppy chewing and eating 'bad' stuff. its alot less with adults.some are already housetrained, leash trained, and altered. temperments are more 'set'.most are very thankful you gave them a 'new life'
cons for adult rescue........ innapropreate learned behaviours, if abused/neglected they can have anxeities and medical issues. some are not well trained or altered. bonding issues.
in any case, its all about the dog.does he fit what you want.if your willing and able to put time into a 'needy' dog, thats great.if you just want an easy going couch dog, there at rescues too. you can find ''owner surrenders'' that are perfect pets,it was a loving life that the dog can no longer be a part of through no fault of their own. if you look at it,a rescue is a hand me down....but in no way any less of a doberman! rescues can do anything a normal dog can do. because they ARE normal dogs.

| I have two rescues at the moment, and one who I bought as a puppy from a breeder. There are advantages to both.
In buying a puppy, you have the advantage of being in control of a lot of things, such as socialization. You are able to look at longevity in the bloodlines, and be informed of any genetic health issues. And obviously, it's assumed that you'll have more time with one you get as an 8 week old than you will with one you get as a 4 year old.
With a rescue, they often come with anxieties and issues, and it can be a lot of work to overcome some of their instabilities. I would be very hesitant of bringing a new rescue into my home if I had small children. However, there is nothing more rewarding than giving a dog who has had a hard beginning a second chance. If the dog you get is already housebroken and even partially obedience trained, this can be a huge load off your back. That helps when you work a full time job. I know when Sadie was a puppy, since my husband and I both work full time, one of us would take a very early lunch to come home and let her out, and the other would take a very late lunch to do the same. Puppies are a lot of work!
It sounds like you are considering taking an adult dog from a breeder, is that right?
