The Trip To Petco

this is more of a rant than anything so, just a warning lol. my g.f and I went to petco last night with Bane and our pit cadence. when we pulled up to the parking lot i noticed this couple also had a dobie. well that was fine and dandy but we were trying to hurry up and get our stuff before they closed so i just said hello and went about my business. a little while later whilst my g.f. is getting some doggie treats the guy with the dobie comes up complimenting me on Bane and telling me how he sells them etc.....while he was talking i was looking over his 3 year old male dobie and was waaaayyyy suprised how the poor boy looked. now i know he might have health issues, im not really sure but for 3 years he was skinny, his poor ears were cropped but both had fallen and they had never taken the time to repost them. he had crust in his eyes that looked like it had been there for weeks, and his face was all scarred up. he actually asked if i wanted to sell Bane......HAHAHA.......right whatever man.....he was talking about how much he LOVES the breed, and how well he takes care of his dogs. i wanted to smack him in the face and scream at him to get away from my dog! he even thought that Bane was in some relation to his dog's brother...which might be true who knows......GAWD.......i just cant believe how some people dont take care of their animals.......the nerve of that guy coming up to me.......

Doesn't that just drive you crazy?
I remember when I had my groom shop I was always amazed at the condition of people's "pets". They'd bring them in matted to the bone with ear and skin infections (won't go into details about maggots but trust me I saw plenty) going on and on about how much they loved their little foo-foo or whatever. Made me sick every time.

At least he didn't ask if you wanted to breed him to one of his bitches. This is a question I get asked every once in a while by a fellow dobe owner in the vet's office.

Typical scenario: I'm waiting for the doctor to see a dog, fellow dobe owner walks out from their visit with a conformational frankenbitch who looks like it was put together by a committee with spare parts, comments on my dog and proceeds to tell me how they want to breed said female, and if I plan on breeding him because they are looking to breed. Fortunately their interest quickly diminishes as I start to ask what the results of frankenbitche's OFA, CERF, EKG, thyroid and vWD screenings are, and what sort of working titles they are pursuing (I know, I'm just a snobby, know-it-all, fringe lunatic. They don't need to test because their dog appears to be perfectly healthy. She's 9 months old and has NEVER had a serious health problem, and she doesn't need any titles to prove her abilities because they have had dobermanns before and they know for a fact that she will protect them with her life - she was only cowering in the corner when the car in the parking lot backfired and couldn't control her bladder because [inset excuse here]. At home, she [insert stupid neurotic overreactive behavior here]. Sorry, I digress yet again...).

Back to this guy...does this breed inherently attract more "special" people than some other breeds (and yes, I mean "special" as in "the short bus with the flavored windows" kinda way) ??? What does he mean he "sells dobes" ? To whom, for what, where does he obtain said dogs for sale ? Most improtantly, does he have a web site (because obvious displays of cerebral deficiency such as this are pushing me ever closer to starting my blog on the idiots who are ruining this breed) ???

So scary isn't it all those poor doberpuppies

The problem I have is the elderly gentleman down the street - he is looking for an Weimerainer stud to breed his daughters dog to (he owns the father) - he has stopped us 3 times thinking Casper is a Weim and going off on a rant about how horrible it is so many people are neutering therir animals-

I don't think he believes me Casper is a Doberman - since he has never heard of a Fawn before

I wonder if some of the idiocy is not because of the "diverse" clientel that Petco attracts. I know I absolutely HATE going in there because the things I see (more blog fodder) drive me absolutely nucking futs, and I almost REFUSE to go in there with a dog, unless I'm proofing obedience (the anthropomorphising idiots and their idiot pets make for great distraction) because I know I will inevitably have to deny at least one person the attempt to start what they feel is an intelligent and productive conversation (I can assure you that I do not view the potential exchange in the same light as they do).

I want to campaign to change their slogan to "Petco...where the idiots go."

A groomer huh ? My aunt was a groomer for at least 30+ years, and I know what I saw in her shop. Oh, the stories YOU could tell, I'm sure....

Oh you all are SO right. I no longer hold back ... no matter what. I have had multiple people come and tell me how they used to have a "King" doberman. I just look them straight in the face and say " there is no such thing " its something crap breeders use to sucker people. And their eyes get real big and normally just dont have anything else to say.

"...he even thought that Bane was in some relation to his dog's brother..."

so he thinks your Bane and his dog's brother are in an 'alternate' relationship? I mean, hey, that's ok - I don't have a problem with it, but have you noticed Bane slipping out at night or other odd behavior?

Ok, join me in my campaign against ignorance. Blunt honesty. Good line for that guy: "Man, your poor dog looks like shit! Don't even compare him to my dog. (Point to Bane): this is a doberman - capiche? Go clean up your poor dog, fix his ears, then maybe you can share our airspace."

Oh no! Other breeds are just as lucky You wouldn't believe some of the calls my boss (breeds labradors for conformation, hunt test, obedience, etc) gets!! Or some of the calls we get at the clinic - like we run some sort of dog dating service or that they can just call up an order whatever breed/type of dog semen they would like - because afterall our clinic specializes in reproduction and we freeze semen...
