My question is there different breeds/ style of dobermans lol, cuz I see in some pictures some legs are shorter then others and some have really long legs. Mayb its just the pictures or male being bigger then femake im not shure.
my second question is if breeders are firm on their prices LOL. I want a healthy nice lookin one but dont have like 2500 to spend haha. And I the breeders looks way better then the ones selling from familys and stuff. ionoe I dont want to spend well over a grand, whats the normal pricing for dobermans anyways. Im on a college student budget. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/dogs...n_pinscher.jpg

haha im guess larger size? | The ideal is for the distance from the ground to the elbow be the same distance as from the elbow to the top of the withers. But you'll see variations of that, some short on leg, others with longer than ideal legs.
I'd say the average price for a well bred pet quality puppy from health tested, titled parents is going to be around $1500-2000. I doubt if too many breeders would be willing to cut any "deals" on those prices, especially for an unknown person with no history in the breed. Things cost what they cost..this is what budgeting and working towards a goal is all about.

| Hi Andy - You might want to do a bit of research on the AKC conformation standards for Dobermans - there is a range, but it is not broad, and there sre not small, medium and large, or toy, standard and giant Dobermans. The "giant" or "Warlock" Dobermans are NOT in conformation with the standards. Males do tend to be taller and larger than females, but again, there are ranges, so there can be a bit of overlapping. You really should spend time reading articles on the AKC and DPCA sites, threads you'll find on this forum, and anything else to educate yourself about the breed overall, before you get one.
Also, you need to realize that a dog, most especially such an intelligent and social one as a Doberman, needs a LOT of time, effort, work, training and companionship - and exercise. If you are in college, at class, studying, in the library or student center, socializing, dating, etc - your dog is going to suffer. It might be better to wait until you are more settled and have free time and the space (and money) to best care for and attend to a canine partner.
Another thing you might consider, when you are ready, is adopting a rescue Dobe - you will not have to spend two grand, and you will be giving a wonderful dog a home it deserves, and love it may not have had. Good luck, and best wishes... Lois |

I just measured him after reading this, his measurements are just about the same! Thanks for posting!

ox | Just looking can fool you. If the dog has a really deep brisket that extends way past the elbow, it can make them appear to be really short on leg. Conversely, if the brisket is really shallow and falls short of the elbow, it can make the legs appear really long.

| | Alpha | I will also point out that the initial purchase price, even if over $2000, is just the beginning and really in the grand scheme of dog ownership you could spend that easily every year on food, supplies (collars, leashes, crate, bed, toys, etc), obedience classes, veterinary care (routine wellness such as vaccines, heartworm preventative, etc. AND unforeseen medical issues - injury, vomiting, diarrhea, ear infection, etc.), licensing, etc.
If I add up all the $ I spent on my old Dobe (over 14 1/2 yrs) it would be over $10K - and keep in mind I'm a vet so the veterinary expenses were at cost or free. Her initial purchase price was $450 (pet on limited registration)

| Basiclly you get what you pay for... You want a really nice looking dog you pay a higher price.. why dont you ask some breeders for retiered dogs?? they are dogs that were show dogs that they may want to place in a home?
Yes there is differant looks to dobes, there is no DQ for height in this breed, just an Ideal height. BUT dogs of 31inchs !! are WAYYYYYYY off base stay away from people that breed dogs of that height, They are just money grabbers trying to pass dogs of such as "Rare".. |

| I'm a huge fan of rescuing a Doberman - Rescues often have fairly young dogs available - (about a year or so) when an uninformed owner realizes the dog is to much for them and they get dumped

| Andy - Retired show dogs who will not be breeding stock and rescued dogs who need "re-homing" will usually be neutered, which will be an expense and care you won't have to incur, and they will have all their shots and wormings, etc, and a thorough background and presonality evaluation, so you will know a lot about these dogs, and can be matched with one that suits your personality and lifestyle... it's a great way to go, and do a really karmically excellent deed at the same time. But, yes, there are ongoing costs - vet bills and vaccinations and flea control and toys (they NEED toys, but some you can make - we do!). They need a leather sofa, a big-screen TV, decent stereo, a nice fuzzy blankie. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
