| | Big Pup | "But dobes aren't like that!" Long time no see, DT! I'm FINALLY (after waiting 2 years) getting a wonderful female pup from an amazing breeder in a few months, everything is perfect except for one thing... my bf doesn't like big dogs.
I'd grown up with shepherds, huskies, and lab crosses and just love large dogs in general, especially since you can give em a good squeeze without worrying about being delicate or crushing a rib! But the only one he's used to is a tiny maltese/toy poodle/bichon. I'm only about 5'5, but he's well over six feet tall, so he'd dwarf anything really. XD Apparently, all large dogs are out of control, smelly, hairy, and destructive!
We currently don't live together, but it may be something in the near future (a year or more). I don't want this to come down to an ultimatum, but I'm afraid of this escalating further. Helpful tips to make him see the light? |

| | Alpha | Probably, once you get your pup and he actually spends some time w/ it, his views will change dramatically - Doberman puppies are pretty damn cute afterall. And if not, do you really want to be w/ someone like that anyway? |

| I had the same problem - I had 3 big dogs and my Husband had a Chihuahua eeekk - my husband still isn't a dog person (actually his entire family never had pets growing up).
When I moved in with my husband I just took Jazz the doberman (the other 2 were really quite old and I didn't think they would adjust so I left them at my parents.
after seeing how well behaved Jazz was he eventually grew to love her -
and yes we still have the Chihuahua -
When it was time to say goodbye to Jazz I had to bargin but we did just adopt another Doberman

| My boyfriend initially said an absolute NO to getting a doberman. I told him to at least do some research on the breed so that he could give an informed opinion and justify his reasoning for not wanting one, other than 'they are big dogs'. After he did alot of reading and internet research, he was much more open to the idea, but still had some reservations. I suggested that we meet with the breeder so he could meet her 2 dobes and talk to her about them. After he met her 2 dobes he was totally sold... he kept saying how they were 'so gentle and had the sweetest brown eyes' and the rest is history.
Good luck!!!!!

| | Big Pup | Thanks everyone, I've been worrying about this a lot lately. I didn't expect him to be so against it, and he's VERY stubborn. |

If he isn't won over after he meets a well behaved Dobe - keep the puppy

| My BF is a cat person. I had dogs when we met but I haven't had a dog in a while, just a dozen cats. He was not impressed when I told him I was getting a puppy and tried several times to talk me out of it. I ended up with a 3 year old bitch instead but my BF loves her. He was sold after spending an hour with her, in fact he spends more time talking to Kinder when he's here than he does me! lol
He didn't bat an eyelash when I said I was getting a puppy next year, he just said "It's going to be another Doberman, right?" lol |

| I actually left a relationship once partly over my dog. Of course there were other issues. Funny thing was one of our last conversations ended with her saying " I can't believe I was replaced by a dog!" My reply was -Believe it !!
Agree with others here - if he does not fall in love with the dobie he may not be for you!!!
