How Protective is Your Dobe

I am not sure how this poll feature works, so forgive me if this is a clunky looking post. But here's the question: How protective is your Doberman of you, your family or home?

I have no idea since she's never been in a situation where she had to defend. And speculation on what she might or might not do is just that, speculation on my part.

Bella haven't met a stranger outside of the house and Beetle is more reserved. We don't really have alot of people coming over to our house but if someone comes over they are fine unless they sense something isn't right. A couple of weeks ago i had a contractor over and had kept the Dobes in the basement while I was at work. I got home and let them out to pee and when they came inside Beetle kept eyeing the guy up so I figured I'd put him in the dining room. I wasn't pleased with some of the guys work as he didn't do as i asked and while talking with him he got pissed and raised his voice. It was a big no no to Bella and she went from happy go lucky to you better get moving or else, I immeditaly removed her from the room and went outside to continue talking to the guy. I trust my two with strangers but always keep an eye out.

Ditto. The only things I have ever experienced with mine are:

London - she will place her body between me and someone in the house that she doesn't know (for example, if a repairman comes over or something). If he moves to the left, so does she. She constantly stays between me and him.

Sadie - Once when she was about 3 months old she and I were laying on the floor playing when we heard a loud noise outside the front door, and she immediately got between me and the door. Also, we "play fight" with my dachshund (who WILL protect me) and when Julie "bites," Sadie will get very upset and mouth her. Oh, and once when my husband was play slapping me to get the dachshund all riled up, Sadie came up and softly nipped him on the top of the head. Not hard, but just enough to be like "hey, stop that."

Mine have not really been put in the positions to have to show me if they would defend so I am not sure... The only things i have noticed are...

This weekend Mia got between me and another dog that was running after us while I was walking her around the lake... This STUPID a$$ with a older looked like Weimaraner was walking behind us. The guy just let his dog off the leash and doing whatever the hell he wanted to in the park we were at. I yelled out to him "is that your dog?" He said "Yes" then I said " well arent they supposed to be on leashes?" He said "Well mine is really friendly!" Um excuse me... Needless to say Mia got between me and the other dog and when the dog came up to us she nipped at him to get out of her face and not to come any closer to me. Didnt really growl or anything but was not happy with him. The poor older dog backed off right away and I kinda felt bad for him. He had a really gray muzzle and all. She is usually GREAT with other dogs but she did not like this other dog came charging at her and I while I was walking her on a leash.

Duke has done the same thing while I have been out walking him. It is usually me having him on the leash and a strange person will be walking on the other side of the road from us and he will get in between me and them... Like he sensed something from them. Other then that nothing really. I dont know what they would really do. They usually LOVE all people but I still make sure that I introduce them properly.

Yea I think it's gonna be speculation for most folks on here. I took my girl out late one night and she heard something in the bushes behind my mother's house during an extended stay and she went, well, insane. Turns out the neighbor lurks in the trees at night (creepy!) so I don't know if that's what triggered her. Or there might have been a coyote or an opossum. Who knows. But if it was the neighbor that solicited her frothy disapproval, well that would bump her way up on the protective list! Because she wasn't just warning him. She was going to escort him out of the bushes with her teeth.

Sounds like she did precisely what she was supposed to do. (And sounds like you handled it perfectly as well!

Similar situation here. We walk our neighborhood at night before bedtime. I think quincy thinks he owns the streets at night - he is hyper alert, walking on tip toes, watchful... anyway, the yahoo (Mr. Clutter) that lives on the corner up the street was lurking in his bushes by his window. Quincy sees him before I do and he let the guy know in dobergrowl, hey dude I see you... then the guy pops out with a sheepish grin and a nervous "I live here".. I just muttered, "Oh, I know" and we moved on.

Besides that, Quincy is your typical watchful dog in and around the house. We know when someone is nigh.

So far, Red seems to be more protective when we're in the cabin up north. He doesn't like anyone walking by or (gasp!) walking down the driveway. I really see his protective side come out when we are up there.

But at home, he's not much of a protector. Since my hubby runs a computer business out of our home, we get a fair number of people coming to the door, and Red loves every single one of them. Plus, he invites strange workmen into the yard for a play session. He barks at people walking or ride bikes on the sidewalk, or weird noises at night, but that's about it.

He's much more protective of us and the cabin than he is at home. I wonder why?

I have noticed this with both of mine as well.... Like they go into more protective mode or something when they think that we are not in the safety of our own home??? When we take Mia and Duke camping, when people walk by sometimes I can not get them to shut up....!!!

The dogs recognize that they're are out of their element and feel the need to be more alert, just in case.

Storm is starting to show signs that she is being protective but I dunno what she would do in a bad situation like an intruder or someone attacking. Anyone I open the door for she will invite them in playfully. I think she is just used to the pizza man showing up with her favorite food, ham subs. She ferociously barks and growl at noises outside now, especially at night. Sometimes when my wife comes in at night she will try to sneak up on Storm. If Storm hears the door or floor creak all of her hair stands up and she will ease around corners hunched over with a low growl until she sees it's my wife...then we get the spinning and flipping circus dog lol. She has started getting in between me and other people and dogs so I guess that could be seen as protective. I think dog's can tell what's going on and how we feel and react accordingly.

Java is protective of HER turf. Barks at joggers who have the nerve to pass the end of the driveway, sparrows who dare perch on the front porch and the deer who graze on the front lawn. But is good with strangers who enter our house once she sees that we have given them permission to do so. I'm hoping she (and Rexx) will be the kind of Dobes the late Richard Prior would joke about: they'll let a burglar into the house but they won't allow them to leave.....

If we come into the house quietly and wake her up, she'll come walking from the family room into the mudd room growling quietly until she realizes it's us, then the ears go way back and she looks very sheepish and embarrassed, nub wagging.

I have to admit my Boris falls into the category of sweet but don't do anything stupid. Our nieghbors followed my husband into the house through the side door and Boris not seeing who had entered through where was ready to escort the visitors out with his teeth.

Buddy is 2.5 years old never barks inside the house Patches does all the inside barking. Buddy does bark outside,Buddy will look out the storm door usually with a toy in his mouth. Very scary Doberman with a toy stuffed in his mouth he does just watch but that is about it.Patches would be more protective of me than Buddy I think but she only weighs about 13 # ankle bitter I guess.Do not think Buddy would be at all protective of me when out on the scooter I guess just his size makes people wary of him.

Charlie barks if anyone comes to the door or is wandering around outside. When I let people in, he's friendly towards them - I don't know how he'd be if the person behaved aggressively towards me because it's never happened.

Occasionally on walks we've encountered men who have worried him. He becomes very alert, gives them the hard eye, squares up to them, advances, then picks his spot and stands his ground. Nothing has ever progressed beyond that point and I'd do my best to make sure it never did. Ultimately while I'm happy for him to be a visual deterrent to dodgy blokes, I don't want my dog at risk and I see it as my job to protect him from harm, when it comes down to it, rather than his job to protect me.

TrexFanatic will become famous soon enough
At home inside Kuhn is pretty relaxed as I think he sees that as the "safe Zone" but outside he will always do at least two to three peremiter checks and a few warning barks when in the backyard. When we go out for a walk he is in high alert mode and ultra responsive to anything out of the ordinary. If we see a dodgy person walking towards us ( we walk Kuhn at night sometimes ) we say "guard" and he gives a few low warning growls and barks if the person gets too close. At home inside he is such a big baby and just wants cuddles and pats 24/7.

I can honestly say I have never heard Dillon growl!! he barks like a nutter but its not agression. Lottie on the other hand is very protective of us and the house

I did notice that Marvelgirldobe, and it made me giggle..... I so wish Sage and I could be in the middle of the bell instead of at the top.

While I don't know what Sage would do for sure what would happen in a dangerous situation, I know what she dose in situations that she thinks are dangerous and let me tell you it isn't pretty but getting better.

The good ol' bell curve. I exercise caution when introducing him to others while on a lead and out pretty much always. Ripley tends to slip into a slightly different role when on lead. Off lead or in my house I'm not too concerned with others meeting him, he just likes to sniff them first.

Olivia has a spectacular aura aboutOlivia has a spectacular aura about
Sasha is still very much a puppy (10 months) but she is showing a protective side. If I take her out in public, she always places herself between me and any strangers. She has a huge deep growl too if someone comes into our yard. She is always friendly with people, but only if I make it clear that they are okay. This is probably one of my favorite aspects of this breed.....:biggrin55:
