| | Lil Pup | Is a Dobermann a good desert watch dog? Retiring in a remote Southwest desert area. Need a good outdoor watch dog. 110 deg heat in the day, gets down to 65 deg at night. Can a Dobermann take those kind of temperatures and hold its own against a coyote? |

| What is it expected to "watch"? Your lawn furniture? Why wouldn't it be in the house? |

| I don't think Dobermans are ever good as an outside dog - they much prefer to be where the people are

| Dobermans make terrible outside dogs. They hate being away from their families. |

| | Alpha | I tell you what my dobermans "watch" when it's 110 degrees here in southern CA....the thermostat on the air conditioning! I have to force them to go outside in the heat of the day.
These dogs have a single coat with no insulation-they don't "do" heat like that well. There's more to it than that, too..these dogs thrive on contact with their people, they don't make good outside dogs at the best of times.

| I just moved to TX and it's been hovering between 100-110 since we've been here. My Dobe is used to heat, she was born and raised on Okinawa but this is crazy hot! I take her for walks before 7am and after 9pm - we play in the yard first thing in the morning or last thing at night - during the day she goes out to potty and then is more than ready to come back in and lay infront of the a/c vent. To answer your question then - aside from the fact that no Dobe (or any breed for that matter imo) should be left outside - I do not think they could handle the elements well at all.

| Nope. A doberman is probably not the right breed for you.
