Sora has the half circle cowlicks that are between the eyes on the bridge of the nose. I think most Dobe have these to some extent. But hers stick up so far, and her hair is so shiny, that she looks like a raccoon in certain lights! I have been thinking of taking clippers and trying to shave the tips off. Probably not a good idea on a 6 month old puppy, if she moves (of course she's going to move!) she'll look like a raccoon for sure!

My last dobe had one on his nose

All of Dobes have some sort of cowlick, but Layla has the zipper going down her neck.

Venom had a small one on his neck when he was a puppy - by about 6 months, you could no longer find it. Had several folks on another forum claim this was impossible - I was called a liar and everything else in the book, but it is true. A couple of his puppies were born with the small mark as well. As adults, there is no sign of it. I can't explain it, just know it happened. Unfortunately, pics I had of him as a puppy that showed the ridge were lost when my house burned a few years ago.

Love the cowlick down the nose ! It's my favorite. Andie has one of those ! I have had many with cowlicks some judges HATE them. I personally always thought they were lucky. In horses the belief is the more cowlicks and the lower they are on the head the calmer the horse. That is definitely true with my horses.

I don't mind cowlicks on the nose, but I really, really don't like zippers down the back of the neck. I think they spoil the whole seamless and smooth appearance a doberman is supposed to have.

Rush had an *almost* cowlick on the back of his neck! Hard to explain and I never did get a picture of it. There was a thin stripe of darker coat going down the back of his neck, and while there was no ridge, that hair somehow seemed more prominent than the hairs around it. Since there was no ridge, I didn't mind it too much.

I know exactly what you talking about I had one with a cowlick like that it. It was a mild cowlick. Most foreign judges dislike cowlicks with a passion regardless of their size. I know a few breeders that really dislike them too. I must admit to liking most cowlicks. But the nose one is still my favorite.

LOL, I'm glad someone knows what I'm talking about, because it really is hard to describe! One of those things I always meant to get a picture of, and then it was too late.

I know at one time both the English and the Australian standards listed cowlicks as being faulty, don't know if that's still the case.

My Tess had a nose zipper as did her one daughter Athena and son Petey, her other daughter Sheena had one go across her muzzle in front of her eyes. The red bitch I had also had one down the back of her neck-quite pronounced just like a ridgeback...

My male MinPin Kaden has a zipper on his nose as does Mason and his brother Luka has the rosebud on one of his shoulders 2 pups of mine from my first litter of Pins .....

All breeds have bum swirls--I think a true cowlick (hair grows in opposite direction and does not lie flat like rest of hair) shows up elsewhere on the dogs body

I love them-think they are neat

Tyson's got a rose cowlick on his left shoulder, Tessa has none. They have the butt swirlies too, but as all dogs have those, they aren't true cowlicks IMO.

My last litter 1975 I think, had a little brown bitch with a lick on the back of her neck (mid-point) she was the most dominent pup I ever bred including the German stock my Uncle originally started with, She would stand in the middle of the puppy food tray and would eat huge amount of food and not allow any other pup to eat until she got her fill. My Uncle refered to cowlicks as razor back dobies, she lived to be 15. as her mother did. Her name was Mercedez but we called her the little PIG.

None of the dobermans I've owned have had cowlicks. One of the puppies I produced had a small swirly one on one shoulder.
I have a soft spot for cowlicks up the nose. Many of my dogs have them. I had one girl with the swirls on her shoulders and the one up her nose.
I think that was the final selling point with my import boy from Sweden..the zipper up the nose.

edit: I just noticed how old this thread is.. I didn't bring it up, btw, someone must have voted on it. LOL. I realized Von had posted and then went "o___O What?"

Hello, old thread!

Nietzsche has one swirly cowlick on his left shoulder and a short zipper under his chin.Liberty has a long zipper that runs down the back of her neck with a swirl at the top. Lots of dogs from jdd's lines are rockin' cowlicks, it seems.

So zippers are the same as cowlicks? Or are cowlicks only the swirls? If zippers count, Si has one down each side of his neck. Otherwise, he's a smooth operator.

Doesn't every Dobe have swirly rust cowlicks on their butt?

Ziva has two on her butt (we always just call them "butt circles" and two of my four small dogs have them too). Used to have a red female dobe many years ago named Sunset that had a "dictator" ridge down the back of her neck, but she was the only one I ever had that had that.

A lot of dogs have the butt swirls... its more noticeable in short hair breed dogs though (a lot of terriers have the same trait)

Bean are you talking about the rift (to different direction fur coming together)? Cause I don't think that counts... If I does then I guess Jonesy has that too... Along with one that runs down his chest... I just amounted that to two different directions coming together....

The Zipper lick I am talking about is backwards on his neck... Everything flows down his neck except a little line that flows the other way

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. I think I'm getting the terms confused.
