| It's hard at times teaching dogs to release.. The whole idea of fetch is so much fun for them, and they easily catch on to the chasing after it part.. but it's the whole bringing it back and releasing it that they have trouble grasping. My family used to have 2 Jack Russells. We had Jackie, the female first, and we taught her to fetch using 2 people One would be the person she was playing with, and the other taking her and showing her what to do. that role usually fell on me. What we did was throw a ball, and let her chase after it. Most times she would run after it and then sit down in front of it. I would then go over to her pick up the ball, put it in her mouth, force her to hold it and taking her by the collar, lead her back to the person she was playing fetch with. She caught on pretty quick. But soon the game became a matter of trying to get her to let go of the ball. She lovedleaping up on her hind legs and wrapping her forepaws around your wrist, trying to keep you from taking it from her. At first I would just take it from her, but as she got older the lock jaw of the Jack Russell made it abit difficult. So I went with Kratty's second advice and refused to play with her. I would force the ball from her twice, using the release command as I did so, and if she wouldn't give it to me after the 2 times, I wouldn't play with her. She soon learned that if she wanted to play fetch she had to give it to me. Jackie though was a sneaky little girl and developed a habit of dropping the ball like 5 feet from me and then barked angrily at me, as if telling me to go to her and get it. She was a haughty little lady, but I loved her none the less. Needless to say I didn't let her get away with making me come to her, and eventually she would close the distance between us and drop the ball at my feet. Max, our male was no where near as hard to train as Jackie. He learned by playing with and watching her. He actually was more fun to play with because he would bring the ball back and instantly drop it at your feet. I believe this was due to the fact that he had a more submissive personality compared to jackie, whereas she was always trying to test your authority and see how much she could get away with. Despite this though, I loved my Wackie girl.
On the aspect of the video, Kratty. I loved it! Dobermans at play! Yay! |
