| | Alpha | Dog Runs? Well since I can't trust Bo to stay in the fenced yard by himself (and the invisible fence doesn't work with him, he'll take the shock to go off roaming)
I am seriously thinking about building a nice dog run for him in the backyard, I looked at the ones that they sell at the local pet shops and hardware stores and didn't like them too well (they seem pretty flimsy for an extremely strong, very athletic, and very smart breed I could see it coming down and him getting out again) I am in the construction trades so I could probably build a very nice one for close to the same price as they are asking for a large run.
Now never having had to put a dog in a run, I just wonder exactely how big I should make it, does it need to have a roof cover? Of course he won't be spending ALOT of time in it, but would spend some time in when I really need to get something done...
Any input from someone with more experience with this than me would be greatly appreciated... Thanks! |

| | Alpha | Also I talked with the guy I got Bo from..... It seems that his jumping could be an inherited trait from his sire..... (a beautiful red dobe too) It seems they had to do the same thing with him (he gave me the idea) because just like Bo, when alone in their fenced yard he would be up and over as soon as he was alone and roaming the neighborhood....... |

| I think an 8' by 16' run should be plenty big enough for a dog who only is in there when no one can watch him. I would cover it from head to toe. lol.{since your guy is an escapee} with wire. maybe do a solid roof on half of it for shade and to keep dry when it rains. And of course a doggy house of some kind and lots and lots of toys. |

Do you think that I should pour a concrete floor(to prevent a tunneling escape attempt) or would burying the fencing be enough |

| I would think bury the fence- doggies love grass- better for their feet and cool... they can dig- and you can always refill.... i heard once of someone putting in a digging box for their dog.... like a sandbox for a kid but filled with dirt !
Plus- concrete - you will always have to hose off pee and poo |

| I have Obie in a 10 x 10 x 6 run when i'm at work. I bought it at home depot. He isn't much of a digger so I didn't bury fence or anything. plus I'm moving soon so I need it to be able to pick up and go.
Anyways, the roof is open and I just covered it in a tarp. Since it's 6' tall he can't jump it.
My sisters Shiba Inu climbs hers tho, so she had to do the top in wire.
I got it at home depot for $300. Not too bad, ones I have seen online were smaller and more expensive. |

| What kind of fence and how tall? I went thru every step that you are and finally put an extension on our fence to make it 8 feet. Sebastian FINALLY gave up and stopped trying to jump. I only spent an extra hundred bucks on 400 feet of green, vinyl covered grating. You can hardly even see it once you back up about 15 feet and it is durable and easy to install.
We went thru the collar like you did and then he ended up wearing down a very solidly built runner. The steel becomes worn from the stress and gradually starts to fray and pull apart.

we have a 4' chain link fence in the backward... if I'm out there with him he doesn't have any desire to jump the fence now, but I know if I put him out there by himself he will.....(we already experimented with this, I had somebody outside where he jumps and I let him out and he went right over to his favorite escape spot and went over..... but we had somebody there with his favorite toy and it stopped him dead in his tracks...lol)
I was going to put up an 8' tall run made out of pressure treated 4x4's, buried about 24"'s below the ground...... with a partial roof and a doghouse. He's not really a climber, he just gets a full head of steam and jumps right up and over and never touches any part of the chain link fence around the yard..(He's going to be an AWSOME agility dog when he's older LOL) |
