| | Lil Pup | Im new here, hi everyone :) i have some questions well, the reason for my post.
im getting a golden retriever puppy soon (please, no hate.. i love goldens even if they arent the fiercest dog out there my last golden saved my life from someone trying to grab me)
anyway, my older brother is coming to live with us soon and he has a doberman puppy, his name is bronxy and hes brown/tan and 7 weeks old
well, when i told someone in my neighborhood that i was glad my golden would have a puppy to play with and not be alone when im at school, he told me to NEVER leave the dobie with my golden puppy alone and that the Doberman would harm her because of goldens friendly nature. i told him that their are no bad dogs, just bad owners and he said it was non sense and that obviously i had never met a Doberman.. thing is, i have met Doberman and ive never seen any aggression towards people, especially puppies, ive never even met a mean puppy.
but i found this forum after doing some research and i thought i would just say my concerns and talk to some people who know/love the breed. and maybe also some tips on how to raise a dobie puppy (especially one that is 7 weeks, a bit younger than when dogs usually come home)
and is it ok to leave a dobie puppy with one of a different breed? sorry if its a naive question i just wanted to hear some thoughts |

| | Alpha | Well congrats on both of you one your new puppies. I know people who are a little more knowledgeable than me will have advice. All I can offer right now is that I don't think you will have any problems. But never leave them alone TOGETHER. Always in separate kennels or someone in the room. You never know what two puppies can get into! I think your golden will have a great time playing with your brothers Dobe!

| First of all, welcome to the forum. Secondly everybody here are dog lovers...no need to apologize for a Golden...and being fierce is not necessarily going to win you any points - so that doesn't matter either.
As far as the ignorant comments, you are right in what you replied to your neighbor. I don't know about the puppies being left together alone part. The experts here will have to answer that one. As for the Doberman hurting the Golden, thats just hogwash. No more a chance of that than any other breed.
Good luck on your new adventure.

| Hi and welcome to you and your Golden (when she comes). Your question is really good and it's unlikely he'd hurt her, if it was a boy Golden there may be some posturing and snarkiness but even then not much as it's not like they are 2 dominant breeds vying for top dog. I just don't think, IMO, that it's a good idea to leave puppies alone together because of the trouble they can get up to. If one can cause havoc, 2 can cause 5 times as much! It'll be so much fun to watch them play together tho, the zoomies, the wrestling and the chasing...sigh...puppy envy.

| | Lil Pup | the last forum i went to pretty much laughed at me for wanting a golden puppy, im not naming names but it was alot of larger breed owners who have dogs that are more commonly known for protection
by fierce i meant kinda like.. known for their protection ability.
the puppies wont be kept together 24/7 or be left alone unsupervised until we trust them together, but he said that dobermans, even puppies, are VERY agressive towards other dogs.. something about the skull or brain or w/e and they shouldnt be allowed to play together, which i think would be a shame and im glad it isnt true. his puppy is SO cute but my brother said we would have to take precautions so my puppy wouldn't pull the bandages off his ears for him |

And the skull/brain thing is an urban legend (100 percent untrue). Dont worry, I fell for that one too, lol. If they are kept in a safe, well padded crate, I cant see it being a problem for a few hours. Again , Im no expert so see what others have to say.

As MALE Dobes mature, they can become rather contentious with other males in their living space. Not so much a problem elsewhere, but living together is a no no for a mature or "teen" male Dobe and another male of anykind.

| I am soooo happy you found us!!! Welcome by the way!
I would love to see some pics of your Golden There are no breed haters here, I can guarantee you that! Especially of Golden's! They are such happy dogs, they always seem to have a smile on their faces
Anyway, the pups will get on fine. Yes, you are right the dobe pup is away from it's mother and litter mates before it should be, your brother will have to work overtime to make sure to properly socialize it once Bronx has had his vaccinations taken care of. At that young, you have to be careful of taking them to too many places with other dogs, they are so susceptible to diseases.
The brain/skull thing is a myth... a lot of people seem to believe it and know about it, but seriously there is nothing to it.
You both will have your work cut out for you, it's not easy raising two puppies in the same household and generally not recommended. Make sure that you both work a lot of obedience work, and work to get the puppies to bond to you and not just to each other.
I don't want to misunderstand the jist of your post, were you planning on leaving the dogs to play together alone when you were gone? I'm not sure if you meant your brother would be present when you weren't. I apologize in advance if I am misunderstanding. I do not recommend leaving the puppies unsupervised for even a minute, they will definetely get into serious trouble alone.
Edited to add--- sorry I just read one of your later posts in regard to the puppies being left alone My bad

| They will love each other like any other two puppies of different sexes raised together. It is much better that your Golden is a girl. I own my first dobie (male) and from what I have seen and heard, it appears females boss them around a bit. Dobes like to play rough but let a female they love get pissed and they back off, in my experience. My male dobe is 15 months and my Maggie Mae (breed unknown, 49 lbs) will get mad at him for playing too rough and go off on him, he just hangs his head and backs off.
Welcome to DT. You may not own a Dobe but you will be living with one so you will get good information from here. Have your brother join when he gets to town.
Oh, When I'm not home my Dobie is still left in his crate. They can't get in to trouble and hurt themselves that way. I say just put their crates close to each other so they will company. This will help you potty train and give them a safe place to go to.
