Scary Parvo - Best Practices for Breeders

Parvo is scary. Just curious what are the best practices that breeders employ to protect their pupps against infections?

I've heard of rules like no visitors during very early puppyhood. Regular washdowns. Protective shoe covers. Can breeders weigh in on this? I'd love to know.

People can walk through an infected area and bring the virus in. Unlike a cold virus, parvo has a stable structure that can protect it in the environment. Puppies should be protected from mother's antibodies for 6-8 weeks, so not letting people come early on doesn't make sense to me. Just IMHO.

I probably went a little overboard, but I didn't go around any shows, or doggie gathering type places for months when I had my litter last winter. I was ok with people wearing shoes in as long as they had not been in dog places - people who did had to take them off and wash up good.

Once my puppies had their 3rd shot in, I relaxed some.

Parvo can live in the ground for many years and is also airbourne certain times of the year. It is my understanding that some areas of the nation are more infected then others. Here in the central valley of Ca. it is very bad. The Vet that I have used for years suggests isolation of new pups until they have received all of their shots.

I have a spray bottle of bleach / water sitting outside my garage door and I spray my shoes when I get home from agility class or the pet food store or the vet's office, etc but seriously, I think I'm spitting in the wind when you really think about it. If there was something on my shoes, I already walked it across my driveway, it's on the floor mat in my truck, etc.

However, I spray my shoes and remove them in the garage. If I've been to agility or obedience class or a dog show, I change my clothes and wash up before I go to my puppies. I enter my house right into my laundry room and sometimes just pop everything right into the washer before I go get different clothes.

I have asked visitors to spray their shoes and wash up before visiting puppies.

I guess I've been lucky since I've never had an issue with my litters.
