Angry Pro Plan Selects - 40 lb. vs 33 lb. bags

Gahhhh!!! I can't get a straight/correct answer from anyone about this. Are they, or are they not, still making the 40 lb. bags of Purina Pro Plan Selects food? And if so, where do they sell it?

I called Purina themselves and they say only Petco carries the 40 lb. bags. All the other pet stores I've talked to (Pet Supplies Plus, Marketplace Pets, etc) tell me Purina isn't making the 40 lb. bags anymore - that they are only making 33 lb. bags now and charging the same price as the 40 lb. (wtf!).

So I go to Petco, and first the dude tells me they don't have any 40 lb. bags and tries to sell me the 33 lb. bag for $48.99. So I go back myself and see a 40 lb. bag on the shelf marked for $46.99. So (first of all) the dude either doesn't know what the hell he's talking about, or he's trying to rip me off. Because why would they charge $2.00 more for 7 lbs less food??

I'm confuzzled.

that's how I ended with a bunch of free coupons from Purina - I was in the mood you are in now over their pro plan performance only being available in 37 lb bags - I was very perturbed - and the customer service lady sent me a bunch of coupons to placate me. But I can't answer your question - sorry. Call Purina and gripe

Most of the 40# bags of dog food has been reduced to the smaller bags but not the smaller prices????Like allot of things in stores with people food just a sign of the times.

Yeah, to me, it's hidden inflation, just like the downsizing of candy bars. Have you seen the latest version of Snickers?!

It's practically fun-size now! Same freakin' price, though.

I think these companies hope we'll all either just be too busy to really notice, or be apathetic about it.

It would be nice to think complaining would help, but dunno.

It's for sure a rip-off.

that definitely sucks! I doubt it's the pet stores choice to sell the 33lb bags and just Purina's attempt to make more profit. Hopefully it's only temporary.. when i worked at petsmart, bag sizes were changing constantly. 30lb and higher is usually always the largest size bag for each brand, so for now i doubt it'll be easy to find 40's.

I definitely noticed that last time I wanted a Snickers fix!
Prices are going up...sizes are going down...
This has to be a red flag to somebody!

Is pro plan really that expensive normally (or just the selects)? I thought one of the reasons it was so popular is the value as far as price/ingredients.

I just saw #40 bags of Pro Plan at TSC for $39.00 on wednesday i remember it specifically cause i was looking for it so i could see what all the fuss here on DT was about. I didnt buy any thou because i feed Eagle Pack. and for what its worth I cant stand the 33lbs bags because i always seem to run out before the end of the month were 40 lbs of Canidae always got me thru an entire month. I would much rather pay more for a 40 lbs bag then loose 7lbs even if it was cheeper.

I've been buying the 40# bags at Petco. Yes, they are $2 less than the 33# bags (???). I've found no indication they are no longer making the 40-pounders, as I've been buying it for the past couple of months and the stock is always replenished when I go there. Right now (at least in my area), they are running a sale of $6 off per bag, making the 40# bags $40.99 and the 33#bags $42.99....go figure??? I've asked at Petco and and was told the price difference is sort of like buying in bulk...some people don't want the larger bags, or have no where to store it. I say fine - not often these days we get more for less.

Also, keep in mind, if you use your Petco card, they will track your food purchases and send a coupon for a free bag after 10 of the same are purchased within a year.

Exactly what i was thinking. I pay $39 for 40# bag of ALS and it gets me a 4-5 weeks and has decent ingredient list but i guess it's really what your dogs do best on. I like to shop in bulk personally too (costco) and hence Rosco's nickname "Costco" because he comes in bulk as well
