| | Lil Pup | Not sure what to offer for adoption I found a 9 month old doberman that I am trying to adopt from a family who does not have enough time to spend with her. They asked me to make them an offer for how much I want to pay for her, but I'm not sure how much to tell them I'll give them. They said they bought her for $500 from a breeder and she is up to date on all of her shots. They would give me the kennel, leash, collar, and dog bowls. The only thing that I would have to do is get her spayed. How much do you think I should offer them? I also have to drive a few hours to pick her up. |

| why are they looking for money? Its there problem that they got her and don't have the time for her... in my opinion its a bit money grubbing... why not just find her a forever home that will love her forever? I'd put the care of the dog first and wouldn't even think about money if i made that mistake. Poor girl.
I have no idea how much you should offer, 500$ is not a lot for a doberman pup from a breeder. Does she have papers? do you know which breeder?

Does she have papers? do you know which breeder? | I know a lot of people reccomend charging an adoption fee. Many "free to good home" dogs end up being used as bait dogs or in lab research. If I every had to give up a pet and charged a fee, I'd donate it to the shelter or rescue or something.
But I agree, it shouldn't be much. In fact, I'd ask if I could just write the check to the local shelter as the adoption fee. |

Does she have papers? do you know which breeder? | I wouldn't ask for money either if it were my dog; it sounded weird to me that they are so worried about the money. This is why I'm just trying to get the dog away from them and get it into my own home where I know I will love it like my little baby. She does have papers and I'm not exactly sure what breeder she is from I just know that it is one in Ohio. |

| I disagree with the free idea. As a breeder of purebred Ragdolls, I never place my retired cats for free, nor did I place my retired breeding dogs for free when I was breeding and showing and rehomed the ocassional dog. Many people do not value something they got for free. That said, I only charge enough to cover the cost of spay/neuter and vaccinations (usually a few hundred dollars) and all my cats are Champions, some many times over, they are all health tested and health guaranteed etc... |

In fact, I'd ask if I could just write the check to the local shelter as the adoption fee. | I can't tell whether these people want a good home for their dog or really need the money. I have offered them money and even said that I have never adopted a dog like that before and to name their price because I do not know what to offer them. I have told them over and over again that all I will work with them on a price and all that and told them I would even take a vacation day off work to go pick her up if I needed to. I just am frustrated because I'm excited that I found her, but I'm not sure what the owners are thinking because they won't tell me a price or anything like that. The price has been the biggest reason why I don't know a solid yes or no on the dog. |

| Interesting, I came across the same situation here in Langley last year and the woman couldn't keep the pup due to her not getting along with her old cats (umm, would have been good to see about that BEFORE) She did say she'd like a bit of money but also said it was more important for her to go to a good home and she didn't care about the money part. I like that aspect. As for the 500.00 they paid, can you say BYB? Offer to give a donation to the local shelter because I'll bet some of those dogs end up there! I do hope you get her tho, not fair to be lonely....

A lot of people regard buying a dog in the same way as buying a bit of gym equipment or something, and if they decide it's not right for them they immediately think about recouping some of their financial loss by selling it on.
It's very annoying but there's not much that can be done about it. It's just how such people are.
I think it's likely that they will want to get back the $500 they paid for her, but it's anyone's guess really - you'll have to make them an offer and play it by ear. Sometimes these types tot up the purchase price, any vet bills, food bills, accessories bills, and think they should get the lot back. Othertimes they are a bit more reasonable and just want to recoup some of what they've spent.

| I got my Dobe from a byb in Ohio. At that time I didn't know any better. I adore him but I have to admit he has some temperment and health issues that could have probably been avoided if I had used a reputable breeder. Since getting him I've noticed ads from his breeder in the paper quite often. Her poor female must be pregnant most of the time. |

| they should let you take her at no cost and provide all her 'stuff' - toys, crate, collars, etc. and any food that she is currenly on and used to, then you can cut her over to whatever food you want later.
