| I didn't really use any special collar for Kole just a plain nylon one with clip.
until he was about 13 weeks.
Martigale choker is what he wears now (16weeks), I like that it doesn't choke him as much as a regular one does. Just My HOP. |

| Do you leave the martigale collar on all the time or just when you go for walks? And until around what age is it appropriate to use a choke or prong collar? |

| | Alpha | I just use one of those adjustable nylon buckle collars on puppies, that way they're not constantly outgrowing them. The fancy collars come later.
NOTHING replaces a good 1/2" wide, 6 ft. long leather leash. Those nylon leashes may be colorful and cute, but they can cut your hand wide open if the dog takes off and the leash "zips" through your hand.

| Personally I agree with the plain old nylon flat buckle collar on a puppy (they grow so fast), and I can attest to the nylon leash laying your hand open (so I would go good quality leather)......
I do think that no all dogs need a choke or a prong collar, and if you start training early you may never need them, they are tool to help you train (not that I have much room to talk I ended up needing the prong as I had no idea how to train loose leash walking, and now am trying to wean us off of it.)

My advice is to get your puppy somthing light in a leash. I think a nice light leash makes training a bit easier at first just go cheep till he get a little bigger then buy him his first long term leash. I agree leather is the way to go and they break in nice.

| I use adjustable nylon ones, but a nylon harness for walkies until they are at least 15 weeks.

| I have a couple of small leather buckle collars, also some nylon ones. I would say the nylon adjustable buckle collars are the best. They outgrow them so fast. I prefer a 4 ft leather leash. I have some of the 6ft leashes, but they just give to much space, and I wind up balling part of the leash up in my hand. I also like retractable leashes for puppies in areas where there is no danger of them bolting out in front of anything. Like on trails or at the beach.
