| | Big Pup | Advice... As some of you probably know from my previous posts that I joined Dobermantalk to learn as much as possible about this breed. I have learned a TON and really enjoy reading about other people’s experiences and, of course, checking out the pictures of your doggies. =] I am on here nearly every day and I have been told I’m “becoming obsessive” (LOL…my bf’s just jealous). All that aside, I still have lots of unanswered questions and things still left to learn...and my birthday is coming up =]] I figured for switch this year I could request something useful, like a book about Dobermans-instead of the patent answer “I don’t know/care”.
So my question to you all…what books have you found to be helpful or you think would be helpful to me? Any and all recommendations (not just books) would be excellent and greatly appreciated!! Every day I get more excited about owning, training, and loving a Doberman (as clichéd as it sounds lol) and it seems like my excitement cannot be dampened.
Thanks again!!

| We are the same way and we are getting our 2nd Doberman puppy - the excitement is no less the 2nd time around! My husband commented last night that he felt just like a kid and I agreed that I felt the same. Three of of my favorite training books are below (and I've read a ton of them, most of which I would NOT recommend). These 3 books will provide a great background of information that can be a framework for evaluating more concrete training advice. You can find a ton of books on how to teach sit, potty train, etc. but these 3 authors will help you understand why something works and why it doesn't! All available pretty cheap new or used at Amazon. The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell (absolutely wonderful book for understanding the best ways to communicate with your dog - full of real life examples) Don't Shoot The Dog, by Karen Pryor (understanding the basics of operant conditioning and how to make it work for you in your training) The Culture Clash: A Revolutionary New Way to Understanding the Relationship Between Humans and Domestic Dogs, by Jean Donaldson (SUPER!)

| Oh, those are great recommendations on books to read!
I'd just add Pat Miller's The Power of Positive Dog Training and your library will be complete...until you take your eyes off that pup and he chews all your books to shreds!

| Another couple for general health stuff...
The Doctor's Book Of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats (same people who do the Prevention mag and books) Extra good one: What Your Dog Is Trying To Tell You, John M Simon, D.V.M.
Lots of info for common problems, ailments and cures, when to see a Vet and how to do stuff yourself. Good for when you can't do an internet search or come here to DT to ask ;-)
