Question Grooming

Do any of you take your Dobies to get proftionaly groomed? Do they really need it? If so how often?

Nope--that's what I like about their coat--if necessary, quick rinse, towel dry, done!!

What about the anal gland thing? Doesnt that have to get done periodicly or do Dobies not really have that issue. Or should that be left up to the vet?

Nope. We brush with a pumice stone sometimes and wipe down with a wet cloth.

My hound dog had anal gland issues, but leave it to the vet i think routine anal gland expressions are not good, as the old saying goes if it aint broke dont fix it.

If I remember correctly, the anal glands should express themselves when the dog defecates. However, if you're not getting a good firm poo then they won't express and that's when you can run into problems.

I've never had to have Poseidon's done.

You are right about the firm poops.

Well theoretically they should but some dogs do have anal gland issues, usually from lack of fibre in thier diet, or if you are softening their food sometimes they can get impacted sorry this gets a little graphic but my poors dogs anal gland secretion was the consistency of thick toothpaste so he could not express it himself, and he had to go on a round of antibiotics because one got infected, and it was VERy painful to be expressed due to the consistency.
Anyways if all is well you should not need to have them expressed but it seems that smaller dogs are more prone to anal gland problems, maybne because are fed more wet food than most large breeds.
