How do you make your own halo? Sully is getting his ears cropped Monday, so Im trying to be as prepared as possible for when posting time comes.

Here is a four part video you can watch on you tube. To make them smaller then the one on the video all you do is clip a little more off the top of the hanger. Making sure to clip an even amount on each side. you will need an Ace Bandage. Also be sure to tape all connecting parts very well so it wont come apart and no edges will poke thru.

Blitzkrieg, thanks so much! Do you find that you need to alternate between taping and posting and the halo? Or does the halo do just fine?

Sorry for the double post, but I just read where you said that you did alternate between the two. I just made the halo, it took me FOREVER!!!! And it looks....well it looks like its the first one I ever made....we'll give it a go in a couple more weeks. Thanks again!

Well, it looks like the "Halo" is simply a slightly updated version of what was called a "rack" when I started out in Dobes (1959). They were mostly used as a cup or a piece of foam are used now--to keep the ears up while the edges are healing. Originally as soon as the ears were healed they were posted.

Racks were generally not the best way to try to finish a cropped ear--they tended to make pockets (as someone already noted) so that the ear ends up laying across the head. Used with more than one puppy or in areas that have anything other than solid board fencing you run the risk of puppies entangling the racks or catching them in wire fencing.

The only time they really were successful for the entire process of getting the ears up were with puppies who had really good cartilage and a very moderate crop as far as the ength goes.

Wouldn't be my choice of a way to achieve standing ears today any more than it was when it was highly popular (in California at least) in the 60's.

thanks for that dobebug, I actually made a few of my own and i worken out great until Kali got bigger. She was finally able to remove it on her own. I actualy had fantastic luck with it at first. We have not had the same luck with tape and stays, as her ears are continuosly getting infected. Thats why i was inquiring about a the Halo since it is professionaly built and slightly different then the version i was making. But im sure your right, and i cant imagine i would have any significant result for the better.
