Kennel experiences anyone? I don't know if we'll do it again

So we kenneled Nina for 4 days where we took classes while we went on vacation. She seemed fine when I picked her up, but since being home she is a wreck; seems to have lost some weight to where I can feel her spine, is laying around in odd places and just seriously not herself.

She puked after eating a cup of kibble but hours later is holding down chicken and rice.

Anyone else gotten their dog back from a kennel to have them this out of sorts for over 12 hours?
We're all keeping a close eye on her.

/have a bridal shower to go to today will check back

its normal for dobes to loose weight in kennels.. its just a dobe thing. we were warned it might happen when we left zeus.

he was fine, but i personally know the lady who owns our local kennels and i work for her mum, so i think my 2 get extra hugs while we are away. we are lucky.

i do hope she recovers soon.. just check with the kennels to see what she has been eating and if she was ok whilst there ??

I leave mine at a kennel run by a Great Dane breeder who lives in a house about 50' from the kennel itself. My two just spent 10 days there. I pack all their food myself with vities in baggies, tote all their bedding etc for them. They stay in side by side indoor/outdoor runs and the runs open to a big grassy play yard. They got to go out and romp together every day on the grass.

My male always loses weight...he is a rescue boy and I think he stresses more. Think of all the activity, barking, etc they endure when they'd be resting at home normally. Cheers had normal weight...but she is an easier keeper.

They both were WILD to see me, drug me to the car (what happened to obedience?) and just were spinning with glee when we stopped at the barn for a good run. Then they slept all afternoon. I know they are tired when they come home from the kennel.

When I drop them off I feel SO guilty...Rex gives this low, long howling noise as I go back to the car. He NEVER howls, poor baby!

Mine always lost some weight, but that tended to work out well for our female, who gained weight easily. We used to jokingly say that we were going on vacation and the dog was going to a "reducing spa" to get rid of that extra 5 pounds. Our first used to lose his voice and come home with a squeaky voice (not kennel cough), and all of them seemed tired and slept heavily in the car and at home for the first day or so, but then they were back to normal.

I recently Had to leave Mars with my mom for a couple of days and when i brought him home he acted the same way the first day back. and theres no doubt in my mind my mom took good care of my boy. i think he just missed his family and got a little depressed.

When my grandmother died, I had to put my 12-year-old Doberman in a kennel. When that was all over, I picked him up and he was lethargic and never the same. He died 2 weeks later. Watch out with kennels. Just remember they are in it for the money, so be careful. If this ever happens again, my dog is coming with me and I'll bring a kennel and put it in the hotel and put him in there while I am at the funeral. Just my experience.

Scoob

P.S. Not all kennels are bad, but I had a bad experience.

LOL, our girl did this too.

Well she is pulling out of her funk --WHEW! I mean she wouldn't stretch, lay on her bed, and acted like somebody kicked her in the butt around the block (which I know wouldn't have happened).

We were going to take her to the vet if she didn't snap out of it.

Funny this kennel does danes too. I like the lady who runs hers a lot but if we can avoid kenneling her again we will.

(((Scoob))) , that is so sad. I definitely wouldn't use a kennel again if that had happened to mine, even if it wasn't related, as I would always wonder. It is a real stress on them.

The only time I EVER boarded my dogs

I did so at a pet resort. Private rooms with beds and TV's, scheduled playtime, and nature hikes. It was over $100/night, but it was only for 2 nights and I was scared to death to put them in a regular boarding kennel. They came out of it with no troubles at all. (maybe wanted to stay a few more days!) LOL!
I usually don't board my dogs, but if I did it again it would have to be a resort or nothing...

There is a kennel about 5 miles or less from my house. I visited it, looking into doggie day care. I really liked one of the owners I met. I told her I was concerned that Q would play too rough with others at the play time. She said she would be willing to let him have play time with her two labs since they play rough also. She also said she would even try to work with him some on his hyperactivity. She lived with someone who had a doberman for a few years and thinks they are great. I have not done it because the times have not worked for me, but I would really like to send him there a few days a week to see if he likes it. It was very noisy though and Q is not used to that. If you pay extra you can get the kennal with a web cam and check on your dog whenever you want to. Of course I would do that. Here is the link:
Welcome to Hickman Creek Kennel Online!

If I had to kennel my dogs, I would give them a shot. More than likely I would have my Mom come stay with the babies.
