Mensa's West Coast Odyssey

Last week Mensa and I began a drive up the west coast of the U.S., from L.A. to up past Seattle. We're headed to Whidbey Island to see my folks.

Day four now, and we've made it all the way up to Gilroy California, maybe four or five hundred miles from where I started (I keep getting distracted with stops along the way). Gilroy's "The Garlic Capital Of The World" (says so on the sign next to the big celery patch south of town).

I'm holed-up in the Rathole-6, I mean Motel-6. Plan A was to be camping in Big Sur right now, but this is the week the whole place caught fire.

Our first two nights we were camped here, Jalama Beach (between Pt. Conception and Vandenberg Air Force Base.

(I was in the green A-frame tent on the 2nd terrace down just slightly left-of-center. I got this picture using a kite to lift a camera)

This place is out there (by Southern California standards).

After a half-hour walk up the coast there's not another person for at least a mile in any direction. No boats, no goats, no motor cars. Not a single lux-u-ry.

Good place to toss the frisbee.

Did I mention we had the whole beach to ourselves?

Today, after we stop in San Jose to pick up a part to fix the flying camera rig (it crashed big-time on Wednesday night, but that's a tale for the Kite Aerial Photography forum) we're going to explore San Francisco. We'll start with a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge and back and see where we end up tonight.

Stay tuned for more!

I lOVE Big Sur.. just the mention of it gives me goose bumps! You & Mensa are a great team! Love the photos.

(Have you ever been to Nepenthe? If not, I highly recommend it.. outdoor dining (I think dogs are allowed), great cheap food and spectacular views)

Sounds like a great trip and with Mensa as your traveling partner, it is all good! The photos are amazing. I learn something new all the time - kite photography. Wow. Impressive. I'm still trying to figure out how to take auto photos with my new Canon DSLR camera LOL!

I'm waiting patiently to be blown away by your pictures on the Golden Gate. I had a house on the coast in a little town called Guallala- south of Mendocino~ before moving to Upstate NY. That would be a fun spot for you guys to hang out and I don't believe it's on fire at the moment. Happy travels to you and Mensa !

San Francisco was fun.

The Golden Gate Bridge is awesome. If you walk out onto it, then stop and look, you will see it actually MOVE.

Mensa went across it three times today. Driving over it didn't really impress hes; she slept. But as soon as we parked just north of the bridge and started walking, she lit up.

Whatever smells she was picking up on the wind semed to really excite her.

Imagine you're a dog, and you make your living by smelling things, what it would be like to have every smell in a big metropolitan area funnelled into your snout at 20mph.

It's summertime in America, but not in San Francisco:

Looks like they had an extra part left over after they finished. That's never good:

That was a cool experience for both of us. Well worth battling the traffic ( I could write for hours about the perculiar driving habbits that seem common to the locals that totally wreck perfectly good freeways) to do.
