I've seen ebay auctions to help an individual dog. Possible fund raising idea?

I think that telling everyone about her situation might help. Maybe sending her story to the papers and the local news station? Could help get the right home as well as more funding possibilities. A lot of papers and tv stations have places online to send in stories.

I'm done here. I guess I just not smart enough about the genetic code to play here.

Father of a Blind Dog: Learning to Care for a Recently Blind Dog - Associated Content

Since I am now the father of a blind, 8-year old, Australian Cattle Dog/Dingo mix, I decided to do a little research on how to cope with having a blind dog. Actually, cope doesn't seem like the right word. It seems too... Pitiful. I'm not coping with Blue's blindness; I am merely learning a new way to train an already well-trained dog.

The first thing I've realized, which should actually be common sense, is that having a blind dog is just like living with a blind person. You can't keep moving the furniture around or it's going to be frustrating for her to move normally.

Teaching her commands such as STAIR or CURB has helped her to understand what is coming ahead of them, and avoid unnecessary falling or tripping, though she is still getting used to these commands I do still have to be cautious around stairs and outside, but this will make things a little easier around these obstacles. I'm noticing she got scared around stairs at first, so I found slowly coaxing Blue down with a treat and a gentle tone to my voice helped her.

Vocalizing or just general noise making is probably one of the most important things I've learned I have to do with Blue. She still loves to play fetch with her ball in the house, I just can't throw it as far and I make sure it hits hard floor so she can hear the thud it makes. If I want her to follow me, I call her name and pat my leg. When I feed her, I shake the bowl, so she understands where it is and what's going on. You get the general idea, I'm sure.

And whatever I do, I do not coddle or baby Blue. Everything I have seen or read has claimed that. With Blue, I obviously treated her like she has some terrible disease at first, making sure she didn't have to move if she didn't want to. I would've gone to the bathroom for her, if I could've. While I was doing all this, I noticed she was doing less and less on her own, and not even trying to do anything she could easily do. So now that I'm not babying her and trying to train her a little more, she's able to stand on her own paws and be independent. Which works, since that's all they wanna be anyways.

Forum for care of blind dogs:

Coping with a blind dog

I am in the US., I know several fund raisers, and or of funds availailable through LSU Veterinary School to support the medical costs of diagnostic and treatment for blind dogs. However, I do not have those kind of network resources in Canada. As far as MOVING her-this I agree would traumatise her if her trusted human could not be with her every step of the way. I am going to continue researching and communicating with several of my contacts and will post what I have found.
Thank you DLS for your efforts to save Sasha.
Perhaps together all of us can find some way, somehow, and in time for Sasha. I agree completely with fund raising efforts and media blitzing her campaign. I have found it really, really, works, I have done this for many dogs many times it would be imperitive to get Sasha's cause out there, because only then can we find the help Sasha needs. I know A LOT of people that live with their blind dogs and their behavior "issues", and all is not lost.

MIA, I went to the nopuppymill site. Great job. Tons of information about rescue there if anyone wants to check it out.
If she's under BLD the rescue should be able or willing to fundraise for her bills, I know we have all had expensive dogs in the past but that's life doing rescue... I can't tell you how many bottle drives, garage sales etc I have had to pay bills. The joy of fostering too is they don't always leave! I had a foster once for a year. It's part of the risk you take when you promise to help a dog.

I don't know anyone at the moment that can foster everyone is full up and the phones are ringing off the hook.

I don't think Sasha's poor eyesight is the biggest challenge here, it is her anxiety. She is a very bright and loving dog, and has made huge progress in the week that Dobekiss has been fostering her. She completley trusts her foster mom, and is so affectionate and willing to please her...totally wonderful and workable dog!

Our immediate concern right now is finding Sasha another foster situation. If Sasha goes into a kennel, there is little hope for her recovery.

Putting out a call to all B.C. DT members....
If you know a kind, patient, dog savvy person who can take Sasha into their home. She might do well with a large, calm dog who can act as an assistant, but she will need a quite home with no kids or small pets.

There is TONNES of support for this dog, people who are working tirelessly to save her. The rescue, myself, Dobekiss, DLS are all there to assist every step of the way.

Hi you guys, sorry I haven't been on here yet but I've been verrrry busy with our girl Sasha. I'm fostering her right now and have had the opportunity to see her go from a cowering, shaking wounded mess to a velcro'd snuggle love. She is ripping around the yard, getting potty trained, starting to do a couple of stairs, getting comfortible on leash with a harness (no neck collar, she freaks) and so many steps forward. She is now eating kibble from a bowl where she wouldn't go near it before. She is obviously used to eating crap food off the ground and having to fight for it. I'm working on it and she IS getting better. She responds so well to proper, non-punitive correction...shake-can, firm "come", she learned "leave it" in 4 tries. She's so smart, well, she IS a Dobe ;-) She has come from a very bad place and it's going to be some time before she gets past it. The anxiety issues are huge but so workible. She is on an anti anxiety medication right now, finishing up with antibiotics from the tooth surgery, has a shiny coat now and lets me clean her ears and rub her anywhere. She obviously can still bond, she is very needy of human contact. I have been researching the vision impared dog websites and there's so much good info! Her sight problems are going to cause people to shy away from her but if they understand that the sight isn't her first sense maybe they will be better with it. She uses her big sniffer first, then her ears and then ties in her vision. She gets around just fine. She's sweet, smart, gentle and sucky. She must have a chance with someone who can be dedicated to her and dedicated to giving her the support she needs to live a joyful life. She deserves it after what she's gone through. Thanks to all who have responded so far, especially thanks to DLS for getting this thread going and all the support she's given with this rescue operation!!! Thanks to Juljules for finding this little girl in the first place and all the work you're doing. Thanks to Better Life Dog Rescue for paying the vet bills (yikes they are)You all ROCK!!

To take in this girl and her problems is going to immense and may be more than can be properly handled. JMO but it might in her best interest to give her the "best gift" we can give our pets...a painless, dignified exit. But this is just my opinion. I'm sure you'll do what you personally feel right.

Edit: I posted this before reading through to the end and seeing dobekiss's post....so don't shoot me.

Oh, my thoughts and prayers go out to this precious girl. If I was single, living in BC and had no dogs, I would take her in a heartbeat. But, I am married, 3 dogs and live in Colorado, with stairs.

Best wishes Sasha and Dobiekiss! Keep us posted.

We have love and support and the chance to make things right for Sasha. So many people working to get her into a happy place ;-) I know there's so many people who would love to help but can't because of location and situation. There's a place for her out there and her home will be found!
