Male vs. Female

Thanks to a post from VoodooLizard I got thinking, do you feel that females are more protective than males. I know quite a few people that swear by this almost regardless of breed.

Back when I was trying to convince my wife to get a Dobie (she was afraid of them since a childhood incident) I had her talk to my grandmother (who bred them for years). She told my wife that the females were smaller and easier to manage (which is obvious). She also said that in her opinion that females were easier to train.

Also, I know that alot of people believe that if you have a male already that should you get another dog it should be a female.

I am close to finally getting another Dobe. I have a male Bull Terrier and he gets along great with other dogs. He full of energy so they usually get tired of his antics. haha He grew up his first year with my Beanie before she pasted on and they got along great (or as well as an older dog and puppy can). They played until she got tired and let him know she was done.

Thanks in advance. Although I don't post here alot I do try to read alot. This place is awesome!!

I agree with the people who told you that since you already have a male dog, get a female next. Less risk of problems down the road.

I had a female (Beanie) for 11 years so I have experience with a female but what makes them very different from a male?

The Breeder I've been talking to said that she has placed males with male over the yeras and never had a problem. I'll probably be going to check out her operation in a couple of weeks. I thinkn I'm leaning more toward a female at this point but I am just looking for different opinions.

I'm not an expert by any means but through listening to everybody on this wonderful forum of people who are I have learned that you should never have a male with another male.

From what I understand you may not have problems at first but the chances of problems arising some time in the future is very high. If I were you I would definitely go for a female.

I've never had a male doberman but do have a female and she is beautiful. Her personality is lovely and I've found her the easiest dog to train (Ihave had male dogs of other breeds in the past). I am sure you will be more than happy with a female.

I've had two male dogs together for many years, one a dobie/lab cross and one a pure lab. The older, Buck, is now 14, while I just lost my dobie/lab mix, Worf, last weekend at 12 1/2. I never had any problems with them - they were the best of buddies.

Obviously this isn't a case of having two pure dobie males, though. I'd be interested in hearing whether male dobies have issues with other male dogs. I currently have an 8 month old lab and was considering getting a male dobie in the future when my 14 year old is no longer around.

There are many threads on male/male aggression - try a search to find lots of info....

It seems people are torn between differences in male/female temperament. (I've followed the discussions closely...) Some think there's a definite difference, others think it's more about the individual dog.

I am always interested in hearing what people have to say about the differences, especially those folks who have had interactions with many dobes over the years - I think then it's easier to point out a trend. Some feel strongly about female/male dogs in general, and this also seems to be a based on differing experiences...

I am going for a female for a few reason.

1) Easier for the first time dog owner, than a Male dobe.

2) Less likely to challenge owners. This isn't a problem for me, because male or female I know my dog will accept me as alpha, but I am worried a male might try and push around my family around.

3) Mature faster.

4) I want to do competitive obedience, tracking and maybe Shutzhund, and I heard females have a better work ethic.

It's fine if you want to look at her place, but personally I would stay away from a breeder who is comfortable placing a male in another home with another male. I talked to several breeders before I got my girl, and the first question that most asked me was if I had another dog and what sex it was. Of course I asked if it mattered, and they told me about male on male aggression. This was before I knew any better also. Only one told me she would place a male with another male, so I never talked to them again. The breeder I chose said she would NEVER place a male in another home with a male regardless of breed. I can almost guarantee you the breeder you talked to is lying about the fact she's NEVER had a problem placing males with other males. Please get a female, it will be much easier for everyone. If you had a female bull terrier, then a male dobe would be fine, but male on male aggression is to common with dobermans. Your bull terrier may get along with your other's, whcih is awesome, but when your dobe hit puberty then aggression could definately start with the both of them. Female dobies are wonderful. I do feel that my girl is more protective than my boy. She was easy to potty train, obedience train, etc., and she minds better than my male, but I do love both equally. Let us know how things go, and I wish you luck.
