| Just need to vent So this morning, I follow the usual routine. Make Diesel stay at the gate while I go open up the truck door, then I tell him "ok" and he comes running and jumps right in and were off to work.
This has worked perfect for months, he sits patiently at the gate and only comes when I give him the command.
Well this morning, same as usual, but this time when I got to the truck he decided to run out without the "ok" command.
He then ran around the truck a few times then ran across the alley and started barking at a neighbors dog behind there fence.
I gave him a firm, "Diesel, come here."
Yea right, he was in la la land and wasn't listening to anything. So I calmly waited a bit until he ran by me, grabbed him and I leashed him up and took him in the house, no coming to work for him today.
I was so mad, but I think i handled it ok, I wonder if he will learn from it?
Anyways just had to vent, thanks for reading. |

| what a timely post....
every morning, 5:30AM, I take Quincy to the dog park. We are the only ones there. The park is off a not so busy street. I have gotten into the habit of throwing open the Jeep hatch and letting quincy jump out free-form - he runs to the dog park gate and waits. My wife is always the cautious one. She says, you never know - anything can happen with dogs - I want you to start back with leashing quincy in the jeep and walking him on leash into the dog park fence.
So maybe it goes to show, you just never know. Things worked out ok for you. But you or I, our dogs could easily run into a street and get hit by a car or something. Thanks for the food for thought.

I would keep him on lease tho, you never know what might happen. Too many possibilities and way too dangerous. |

| | Alpha | I think you handled it perfectly. I'm certain he realizes he did wrong by not going to work with you. Just like people, dogs are entitled to having an off day. Hopefully, tomorrow will prove to be better for you. |

| Poor Diesel! Afterall, he was just being a teenager!! Seriously, he blew it so no fun and games - grounded!! Sounds like you are a great parent.

| You handled it just fine.
It's an important reminder though that we should never be lulled into imagining that we can trust our dogs 100%. We can't. They might do exactly what we tell them 999 times out of 1000 but it only takes that 1 time of them not listening for an accident to happen.
