101 Ways to Entertain a Bored Doberman

Here's hoping we do get up to 101 ideas! Please post your ideas and photos are encouraged! I'll start it off with my favorite idea.

CHEAP & HEALTHY STUFFED FROZEN MARROW BONES

1) I buy the rather expensive marrow bones (package of 8 below cost $7.00 at a local supermarket), freeze them and let the dogs them empty them out. They come filled with marrow, of course, which is much too fattening to give very often. So I recycle the empty bones and refill them with my own healthy mix as shown in the series of photos below.

2) I soak good quality kibble for a little while until it is softened a bit. Then I add some canned good quality dog food (LOVE Paul Neuman's Lamb & Rice), a glob of peanut or almond butter and some organic oat cereal, both of which help hold the mix together. I usually add some other good stuff like dried or fresh blueberries and, after it is all mixed well, a little chicken broth to make it into the consistency that is easily squished into the empty bone cavities. I usually have my own frozen homemade chicken broth but was out the day of these photos. If you need to prevent your dog from getting too many calories, just count this as part of their daily meal allotment. If you have 5 rainy days in a row, as we did when I came up with the idea for this thread, you will probably want to do this. I use these often for an hour of quiet time but my dogs get so much exercise I don't have to worry about calories. Also, there is not really much total volume in each stuffed bone.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: I DON'T make the mix really mushy so that it won't drip out onto dog beds or carpet when they are chewing the frozen bones or abandon one under the couch!! My mix is very cohesive and will not come out of the bone easily, which also makes the dogs work harder to get at it!

3. Stuff the bones tightly. YES! This is the messy part! This medium mixing bowl full cost me about $3.50 and filled a total of 19 bones! Woo Hoo! Dogs are patiently waiting to lick the bowl.

OOPS! Not so patient!

Here's one of the things I did for Brandy when she was recovering from surgery. I still do it occasionally now, just because she seemed to like it so much!

Take a muffin pan and put a thin layer of kibble in the bottom, maybe hide a treat in one of the cups just for fun! Cover all the cups with toys; I used balls, her kong, whatever you can find!

Noir had to help.

Nom nom nom!

Oooooh - good one! I'm going to try it and glue the treat down with peanut butter/rice flour paste, then let that dry - to make it harder. I'm mean like that . Love it!

We are marrow bone recycl-ers here too! I thought I was the only one. lol.

Other than that and the normal fill the Kong will goodies and freeze...

On hot days I put a bunch of random yummies (bits of chicken, carrots, ect) in a water/chicken broth mixture. Add a toy, usually his Kong (with the best yummies inside) and freeze it all in a Tupperware bowl. Pop it out and you have a Pupsicle!
He'll go to town on it for quite some time. Outside only treat though, that's for sure!

FLIRT POLES!!! Anyone have photos? I use a little bitty short one as a reward for indoor training - they do behaviors at warp speed for it.

haha something like that

Oh i'll also add boxes to your list...and mabel says if you must be fancy, you can tape them shut and fill them with things...but that seems so unnecessary and in the way of the shredding process

These are all fantastic ideas! I just throw Jasmine's basketball in the backyard and sit out there and watch her go haha. When that thing finally bites it, it's going to be a sad sad day for her ... and me

My dog made a small hole in one her rubber balls and I use that ball by putting some peanut butter in it and give it to her. It takes hours for her to get all the peanut butter from inside it.

Squirrel has had a thing with metal bowls since day one when I got her just before she was 8 weeks old. I started with 2 small bowls for her food and water, which wouldn't last a minute before she started barking at them and flipping them over. So now, if I have to entertain her inside, I give her a stainless steel mixing bowl and she will bark at it, flip it over, beat it like a drum with her front paws and trot around the house with it in her mouth until she poops out!!

We do a lot of hide and seek here. Depending on which dog, I hide food/treats or a favorite toy. They have to "wait" until I tell them to find it and off they go :-)

Have used 2 of these ideas from others already (stainless mixing bowl and stuff in a box) - wonderful for a bored 6 month old on a rainy evening.

Here's the oldie but goodie: TUG!!! I taught both of my dogs to tug and it is a fantastic game to play in the house to wear them out. I love Susan Garrett's video where she taught her 2 dogs to tug with each other so that you can learn to "tug like a dog" and not hurt your pup/dog with incorrect tugging technique. She also gives great tips in this blog post.

Improve Your Dog Training By Playing Like a Dog! | Susan Garrett's Dog Training Blog

This is also one of her posts that is awesome for developing your dog's interest in tugs and toys:

How to Create a Motivating Toy

Several great videos from Michael Ellis on tugging:

Michael Ellis Talks on Playing Tug with Young Puppies - YouTube

The Power of Playing Tug with Your Dog - YouTube

Michael Ellis on Selecting Tug Toys for Puppies - YouTube

REALLY interesting article on tugging with your dog - after reading it I understand why you can use tug to keep your dog engaged with you in highly distracting environments.

Ahhhh! This is day number five with lots of rain! Today we're going to train tricks in the dining room. I've pushed the furniture back against the walls and I'm getting treats ready. When it's not thundering we're also going to take a walk in the rain. Any other ideas for us???

The other day Coco was bored but it was raining and she refuses to go out in the rain. After throwing her ball up the stairs for her to find and bring back to me I put some treats in an empty water bottle for her to destroy so she could get them out. She always loved chewing on empty water bottles when she was a teething puppy and I still give them to her every once in awhile.

This actually lasted for over an hour as she had gotten the lid off but collapsed the bottle so she had to work on chewing open the bottle to get to the treats.

A word of caution....Coco has never been a dober-goat that ingests what she chews up (plastic, stuffing, etc). She likes to shred things that she can but never eats the debris. If your pup ingests the debris, this would not be a good choice. Coco just spits the stuff out to get to the treats although I do supervise her anyways just to be safe.

Good luck. I hate rainy days.

Roxy doesn't ingest anything either (thank goodness!)
She does enjoy tearing the "leather" off an old softball once in a while. We have those in abundance, since SO plays and always has dead balls around.
She just leaves a pile of shredded, soggy bits to clean up.
And I watch her the whole time.

Scent training.

Use vanilla extract, tea tree oil, ect and dab it on a cotton pad. Associate the smell with a treat. So every time the dog smells it, here is a treat. Use a key word like 'find', place the pad across the room, encourage dog to find it, treat. Now, hide the pad under a cup, use three cups. Encourage the dog to find it, now he can't see the pad, he must sniff it out. Eventually you can start hiding the pad in creative areas, in a shoe, up high on a book shelf, in the toy box. Chase loves this game, and through repetition he has fine tuned his sniffing skills to the point he can now track the smell in a football field!

He'll go to town on it for quite some time. Outside only treat though, that's for sure!

THIS IS AWESOME!
I make them in margarine tubs, 5 or 6 at a time and they're roughly the size of a hockey puck. I put in whatever meat we had for dinner that night, plus veggies.
Even this small size will buy us a good half hour of quiet time.
I make the same thing but in ice cube trays for my small dogs.

It's a big hit here at our house!

When I read this it scared me 'My dog made a small hole in one her rubber balls '' I saw something where a dog got its tongue stuck in a ball that had only one hole in it when it has two less suction anyway the dog's owner came home found the dog took it to the vet. Too late they had to amputate the dog's tongue because it had swelled inside the ball became necrotic (no blood supply to the end of the tongue ) the owners had to stay with the dog and teach it how to drink and eat. The ball was one that was bought it only had one hole in the ball. Kong s have two holes one each end to prevent such a problem please be careful.

Have been using the pupsicles. Yay! They are awesome entertainment. Also did a lot of "teaching from the couch" yesterday because it rained most of the day. Going to make a video of that game later today. You do 3-5 minutes of training during the commercials. So much fun!
