As I'm sure many of you can relate to, we have dogs that melt if they have to potty in the rain, scream and howl like we're killing them if it's bath time and whine and snivel the whole way if we go for a walk in the rain.
So it's been raining here for the past 3 days. Today it was pouring absolute buckets, actually raining sideways. The pups have been so restless from lack of outdoor time that we decide to go to the dog park anyway and see what would happen as it's supposed to keep raining for the foreseeable future. (Thank goodness they have a covered area for the humans)
So what I want to know is, given all the above, how on God's green earth is THIS fun?!?!? Can someone please explain it to me!
And for anyone wondering, no, the dog park doesn't have a pond, it's just been that wet lately :rolleyesww: They were at it for an hour straight. You've never seen such mucky, muddy, wet dogs ever! They're both passed out on the couch now. Finally, peace and quiet
Actually I've found that the best way to break my dogs of water sensitivity is to pick their absolute favorite thing to do and only let them do it in the rain! Or a sprinkler if the weather isn't cooperating lol. Dart hated water when he was a pup, and his favorite toy is a synthetic tug that we used for drive building. It was the middle of rainy season, and for a solid 3 weeks the only time he got to play tug was outside, in the rain. The first session it slowed him down a bit, but he quickly forgot about the rain and just played!! Don't be surprised if they aren't quite as worried about the water now!! ;-)
I discovered long ago that tho Parker will give his stranger bark, scream like a little girl and give the most mournful somebody's dead howl rather than just go pee and poop for god's sake, if I just step out into the rain with him, he's happy to ruuuunnn and plllaaayyy in the rain. He will get soaking wet as long as it's raining on me, too.
Skoll was one of those mythical doberman that doesn't melt in the rain or shower and walked through puddles like dry land. He wasn't very impressed though. The coat I had on him was also warm and waterproof since it's winter so that probably helped.
But the puddle thing? That's all Mocha thinks about when walking in the rain... where's the nearest puddle to splash in? Definitely a water retriever :rolleyesww:
Striker is the same way - he hates rain, is decent for baths but never thinks twice about getting out once it's over, but he LOVES puddles. He's enjoyed puddles on quite a few walks this spring with all the rain we've had.
Too funny... If it's raining outside... I try to get my girl all excited about going outside... She's holding her breath for the door to open... I swing it open real quick and say "GO", which normally will result in a full sprint and leap off the deck... It's amazing just how quickly she can slam on the brakes and her ability to reverse her leap in mid air.
Ruger doesn't have a problem going out in the rain but he has a dachshund sister who loves rain and snow so I think she is a huge influence. Now when we first got him he actually hated going outside he acted like we would leave him if he went alone glad that's over.
I've always been walking my dobes since I was a kid. In the rain, shade, sun, night and day. Really love walking them for long distances, relaxing to me before bed. They don't care if it's raining out, aslong as I'm out there with them getting wet. The thing they love the most is being dried off after.
I love their huge smiles!!! Gideon does that! But in the rain he runs out, does his business and runs back to the porch, crying like a small child until I let him back in. Typical.
Lady Kate, you're the reason why I shouldn't read DT at work! I actually snorted my coffee :roflmao:
Nothing's changed by the way, we went for our walk today (still raining :rolleyesww and they had their ears slicked back, nubs sucked right in and whining the whole way!
