Heavy or light sleeper?

I have noticed something which I am not sure if it is unique to Toby or is a general thing with Dobes.
I say Dobes and not all dogs because none of my other dogs do it or have ever done it for that matter. So I thought I would run it past you guys.

Whenever Toby is sleeping on my bed he sleeps so deep that it is literally like trying to wake the dead at times.

Last night my son went out and came back in around 3.30am, now normally if Toby is sleeping in the rest of the house he is up and barking his head off as my son drives up the lane but not last night. Last night he was sleeping with me and as per usual Toby failed to notice anything was amiss. That there was someone not only outside but on a couple of occasions actually in the house he has been so dead to the world. Honestly he doesnt so much as lift an eyelid twitch an ear much less jump up ready to take on the world.

Now last night I actually didnt know it was my son who had driven up. My Terrier was barking like crazy (it was what had woken me) so I was listening out when I heard the door open but whereas my son normally says out loud. 'it's just me mum' he didnt say a word, instead he kept quiet as he knew I had been working hard that day and he thought it best not to disturb me. As my son moved around in the light of a small table lamp not the big central light of the living room I got up ready to do battle with some burglar or madman (got to be mad to enter a house with 3 dogs) all the while noticing no sound was coming from my other dogs, (scary thoughts entered my brain on that score) so I put my dressing gown on, opened my bedroom door and then and only then did Toby wake up.

Of course the moment he realised someone was in the house he stormed through the doorway like a Dobe possessed and had a right old go at my son who was by this time in the kitchen (until I told him it was my son and not some crazy idiot come to take my mixer away with him)

After the excitement of it all I started to think, is it normal for a Dobe to sleep so heavy? I mean if my other dogs who have all at some time shared my bed with me jumped up like their tails were on fire at the slightest noise why does Toby sleep as if he were sleeping the big one and not even raise an eyelid?

Do your Dobe babies sleep like this? Are they so comfortable on your beds someone could actually get inside your house without them waking?

Bruce sleeps extremely deeply. If you just walk into our house when he is asleep he wont notice right away (but be forewarned, when he wakes up and realizes we have company he will lick you to death haha). If you knock though he will wake up and lose his mind (he hates people knocking, the minute I tell him theyre ok hes fine).

If he is sleeping on my bed he does seem even harder to wake up, sometimes I think hes faking so that he can continue to hog the pillows...he has a thing for pillows lol.

Hi, My name is Shelly and I am the proud mom of a 6 month old red girl by the name of Mercy.

I think your story is so funny because just this past friday my husband worked late and didn't come home until 2 a.m. I had the jitters all night so I allowed my red girl and my maltese to sleep in my bedroom. At around 1 a.m. I heard noise my little guy was quick to bark. I was waiting for Mercy to do the same but it NEVER happened. So I got up and walked towards the stairs and it wasn't until I said, "I have a gun" (Taser gun but the maybe intruder didn't have to know that) and halfway down the stairs, that Mercy came barking. Lol! It was not an intruder and there was no one in my home. Just me and Bentley (maltese) being paranoid. :roflmao:

Mercy is only a pup so I don't expect her to do much. I have my little guy for that. :)

Jonesy....

During the week (when I have to go to work) He is normally snoozing under the blankets when I get up... Doesn't even respond to my extremely loud alarm that I have to get up and go across the room to shut off... Then I get into the shower... Jones is still under the covers... He doesn't get "up" until I rip the covers off him... I can say "wanna go X" not even a slight head lift...

On the other hand... During the weekend, if I make the slightest move he is up and ready to go... even if it's just me shifting in bed/the couch....

Sometimes Buddy sleeps so deep I often wonder if he died, I yell his name loudly, shake his foot, shake his body, even thought about getting my old stethoscope out to listen to his heart. He also sleeps so deep even when Patches my dachshund barks she may be little but has a loud bark. I often wonder if Buddy would even wake up if an intruder came in our house. When he is sleeping so deep his breathing is very shallow hard to see sometimes ? now I know he is not the only one.

Dart doesn't sleep that soundly, I think? He's usually the super restless wide awake 70# sh!thead circling all night and keeping me up lol. Even if someone did come in, he'd probably try and play with them... He's only put on his big boy pants on one occasion, and it was because he found a large, bearded gentleman wearing a hat on his couch. He was our friend, but dart had never met him before. Scared chris half to death once dart went off barking and snarling in his face. He snapped right out of it when I told him to go into a down. But I often wonder how he would react to an intruder...

Funny I was thinking about this recently, Mister Parker appears comatose he is so deeply asleep. My children are often in and out with friends at all hours and he doesn't stir! Don't remember my others being so fast asleep but perhaps he will become more alert with age. Also I find Dobes go to sleep very early, if I take him training in the evening he is asleep on the floor by 9 o'clock. My last boy was the same.

Very rarely Parker will sleep really deeply. I have put my hand on his side and actually shook him to wake him up, but most of the time he's up and fussing, barking and growling if he hears a bunny fart in the far back yard...and cats...he must hear them walking this way.

Light sleeper

Howdy,

Lasker's the lightest sleeping of the three dogs we've owned: Doberman (current), Airedale Terrier and Beagle.
One can truly say that there's no sneaking up on Lasker! Our Airedale-our most recent dog-was a comparatively heavy sleeper. BTW, Airedales are wonderful all-purpose dogs. Interesting thread.

Roxy only sleeps deeply if she's cuddling with her "daddy."
All other times, she will awaken at the slightest noise.
It's as if she feels safe with him, and doesn't need to be on alert.
When she's sleeping with him, she dreams and sometimes snores :D

Got a little of both....
Malia is a fairly sound sleeper. If it is condition normal (no doors/cars/barking) you can walk up and (90% of the time) touch her before she will wake. Other conditions have a different outcome. If Magnum barks, she is up (somewhat dazed) and trying to figure out what is going on. Car door, maybe she wakes, maybe not.
Magnum is mostly a light sleeper. He sleeps on the bed and almost any movement out of me and he is on full alert. Neighbor comes home, full alert and usually a growl or bark. If my legs swing out of bed he is up and going full steam. On the other hand... once or twice I came home from work (car doors, keys, front door, greet Malia, close door) and walked all the way into the bedroom to find him "dead to the world" sleeping. A couple of times I have made it into the livingroom before he came out of the bedroom to check on things.

Hades doesn't get to sleep in bed with me but he isn't a very deep sleeper. In fact I have to block him in to his section of my bedroom or he'd be up barking at the lizards snoring outside at all hours of the night.

Now Snoop, being deaf, is the deepest sleeper ever. Sometimes even a hand on him won't wake him. But when he does finally feel the hand he startles awake so dramatically my friend who dog sits always thinks she's going to give him a heart attack when she wakes him.
