Dog in your beds?

How many of you sleep with your dog(s) in your beds?

Me ... I do not. I have my reasons ... mainly related to training, and not wanting the dogs to whine incessantly when they can't share our bed.

I also have a small dog, and I don't want him to get "alpha" ideas into his little canine noggin.

The other is related to hygiene. I don't want my bed to smell like a doggie. I also don't want the dogs in the bed unconditionally, meaning also when they stink, or have an upset stomach (vomiting and gas, oh yeah!) ... stuff like that. And I won't be able to pick and choose when they sleep with me.

But I know that other people DO share their beds with dogs and that there are advantages to it.

I was wondering what you guys' philosophy on this is and what works for you.

I have best of both worlds. When I'm in bed on the laptop or reading a book, the dog is allowed up on the bed. He doesn't get snarky, he doesn't whine, it's just part of the routine. When I'm ready to fall asleep, he knows its time to go to his bed, no fuss, no fight.

I don't let him sleep throughout the night because he ends up lying on top of me, and he is not light (95#). Plus he likes to make sure I'm still alive by licking my hands and face at 4am.

Once I could trust Skoll out at night, I said that he'd figure out if he wanted to sleep on the bed or in his crate, whichever he felt most comfortable with. He decided for me :lol2:

First night out of the crate... I tried to roll over in my sleep... couldn't move... couldn't feel my legs... reached down and nearly jumped out of my skin when I felt a warm wet tongue on my hand instead of my legs! :roflmao:

After that we figured out how to both fit, and he'd get up at 6 or 7am and buzz around with a toy breifly and then sleep in his crate (door open, his choice) until I got up at 9 or 10 to walk him.

I didn't notice a doggy smell on my bed but he didn't have a doggy smell either. He did spend some nights in his crate after that, if he'd been annoying the cat nonstop and I didn't trust him that night with her, or if he swallowed something bad and had the runs. He was happier when he spent the night out of his crate and was less resistant to going in during the day during class/work, but he didn't fuss too much about sleeping in the crate either.

My beagle mix always sleeps in bed with me -- under the covers, no less! :roflmao:

On the other hand, while she is invited, my doberman mix prefers her own doggie bed over my futon. Probably because I'm a restless sleeper and she doesn't want to be disturbed. hehe

As for smell: I like my pups' odor, for the most part. They're bathed once a month and brushed every day, so they don't hold on to dirt. Also, I've never had a dog vomit on the bed. On those extremely rare occasions when one or the other of them has become ill at night, they managed to get off the futon and/or out of the room before vomiting. They don't want to soil where they sleep, and that includes puke in my experience.

I've always found the dogs sleep longer in the morning when they're snuggled in bed with me.
And if they have an upset tummy, or need to scratch, they jump off the bed so I'm not bothered--or at least, I wouldn't be, if I weren't involved in the mad dash to get the dog out the door before he explodes.
Emphasis is mine.

Willow (my aforementioned dobe mix) is the same way. She will sleep in an extra hour, minimum, if she is allowed to stay in the bedroom with me. If she's crated or downstairs, she gets up bright and early. :rolleyesww:

My Boston sleep under the covers at my feet every night...he's my little foot warmer. My pittie sleeps next to me (positioned just like a human lol) whenever she wants, which usually isn't every night. Poor Deacon got the crappy end of the deal. He came last, so there is just no room left in the bed anymore. When hubby goes out of town Deacon gets his spot, so all 3 are snuggled in bed with me :)

They are allowed because nobody is pushy about it or expects it. I also wash my bedding at the very least once a week.

Elsie (jack russell x border collie) sleeps in my bed throughout the day when I am not home, and in the evenings she will nap there after training. We don't mind, and she isn't really a dirty dog... We wipe her feet when she comes inside. Sometimes we let her come onto the bed in the weekends if we're having a sleep in, but she does not sleep in the bed with us overnight, as I wake easily. The cat doesn't sleep on the bed overnight either, we tried it and he just kept waking me up every half hour.

Guilty! Haha! I agree, Brandy will whistle to go outside at around 7 am when she is in her crate, but when she is snuggled in my bed, she will happily snooze away until at least 10 am! She sleeps under the covers on the pillow beside me. Heehee!

The dogs are allowed on the bed during the day, but at night, they have their own beds. Depending on how cold it is outside, we can have anywhere from one to half a dozen cats with us, though. The older dogs sleep in our room, while Leo is crated in the living room. She sometimes wakes up early, and needs out before the other two.

Sigh.... I really need to wash my bedspread......

Jones has always slept with me (At least since he was to be trusted out at night)...

I've never had an issue with whining, I decide when he is allowed on my bed... He typically sleeps under the covers also... I've never had a smelly dog smell, or at least noticed, but I wash my bedding weekly, and yes he most definitely sleeps in ALL the time lol

He has his own bed (it's the guest bed) that he is allowed on all the time and the couch (couch has rules too, company gets first dibs, if there is room he can join if not, floor)

When Slater was a puppy, he found his way into our bed and snuggled between my wife and me. Then, when he got bigger, he started sleeping in his own bed by our bed. There just wasn't enough room for the three of us and I think he got too warm. Now that he is gone, I would give anything to have him in our bed again.

I have 5 dogs...that all sleep in bed with me and my husband! Thank goodness for a King size! Three of my toy poos usually sleep around my head. The rescue sleeps wherever he so pleases (he's overly entitled) and my Dobe usually sleeps at the foot of the bed. They go out around 8 every morning. When they come back in, my Dobe usually comes up and cuddle with me. My dogs are all bathed about once ever 7-10 days so they are never smelly or gross. However, they will ALL sleep quietly in their crates if I need them to.

Avril says humans are sometimes allowed to sleep in her bed.

She sleeps in my room every night. Usually she will be on the bed when I'm not in the room but when I go to bed she likes to sleep under it. Either she gets too hot or I kick her in my sleep... She does know to get up and stay off if I ask her to. And she doesn't really smell.

My girl sleeps with me every night on top of the covers. She is the best sleeper and doesn't wake me up at night.

I agree with the others, my dog doesn't really have a doggy smell. I wash the linens every week, so no worries about filth. I wipe her feet if necessary, but really don't have to that often.

She's only had one bath since I have had her and that has been 6 months. She has never soiled the bed or her crate.

I choose to have her sleep with me because I feel that has formed a closer bond with each other. She's my best girl!

******* sleeps in my bed. ******* steals my covers. ******* steals my blankets. ******* hogs the bed. There is something comforting about having her there though! My dobergirl's a snuggler. She either sleeps next to me like a human with her head on the pillow, or she tries to sleep all over me :rolleyesww:

My friend showed me this, and it's so true:

Sometimes he sleeps in his crate so if he has to be watched by sumone else he doesn't flip out. That sleepin w pet pic is greeeat kmbeach lol

Fiona has slept in bed with me since she was about 10 weeks old. :) She also prefers to sleep under the blankets so I lift them up for her and she walks down near the foot of the bed and lays on my legs. If she gets hot, she just walks out from under the blankets and lays on my legs on top of the blankets.

Sometimes Tali sleeps curled up next to my chest under the blankets (she's the little spoon and I'm the big spoon) and sometimes she sleeps on the sofa. It's up to her. Some nights she sleeps with us for half the night and then goes to the sofa if Fiona wallows around too much and annoys her.

Fiona says, "I always get my beauty sleep on a king size Tempurpedic with 1200 count Egyptian cotton sheets and down comforter! Is there any other way for a Doberman to sleep?"

At one time we had six dachshunds in bed with us now it is two. If they are sick the sleep in the laundry room. Not sure if we are just lucky but the do not stink. I only bath then hen needed and one gets shaved. But that said we have really nice mattress covers so mattress looks new. I also have OCD about sheets I used to wash every day but now managed to every other day.

Ruger is not sleeping with us he does smell like a dog sometimes and I am washing his blankets all the time and fabreeze the bedding and he has had two showers plus a bath. I don't like to bathe more than once a month it can harm natural oils in the coat. He does get on the bed for loving time but 9:30 he gets down and goes to his bed.

Rams is loose most of the time and hangs with us in bed while we watch or play on the net. When we are ready to sleep, we ask him to leave and he finds his way to his dog bed (although he does prefer to be tucked in).

I work evenings so Rams sleeps with Wife until I return. She likes the "security" of having him with her during the night. He returns to our bed in the morning and cuddles until I wake mid to late mornings.

This arrangement has caused zero behavior issues and very few hygiene issues. He is clean with little or no odor. He sleeps on top of the comforter which is washed weekly.

I laugh every night after work when I return to wake him from a deep sleep. He stumbles from our bed and down the hall like a drunken sailor who can't open his eyes enough to navigate the house. He is so sweet and cute, almost helpless, when he is half asleep. We have a routine: I wake him, he stumbles behind me to the living room, smacking his lips like he has dry mouth, bumping in to the wall or couch, stops when he bumps in to me where he almost falls asleep while I rub his ears. Then, the Doberplop in his bed.

Rams would never sleep with me overnight. He has numerous periods of REM sleep where he growls, yips, and runs in his sleep.
