Its the easiset crop for ****ty cropers to do. Plain and simple. They don't have to shape or cat they just make one big rounded cut and call it done. Add in byb dogs with uneducated "breeders" and new puppy owners and tada...
In all honesty, if people really thought about it the longer show crops actually retain a good portion of the ear...
With these military style crops, they a literally removing a majority of the ear.
My boy has the medium crop but his ears weren't very big to begin with and had only a small amount of ear removed for his crop. A medium crop suits him best with the small ears he had. Heck, they were already trying to stand when he was not cropped. They would stand, then droop at the midsection and tip.
I prefer mediums, they are the most proportional, its just hard to find ones with good shape compared to when the cropper does them long. And yes they do retain most of the ear in some cases straight to the tippy top.
And yup if you see a natural dobe with the goofy perked up ears from the base they would likely have stood easily if cropped. They don't all do it
I second probably bad breeders, those who buy from byb's and pet stores without proper knowledge who take their puppy to any vet to have it done not aware that not just any ol' vet can do a stellar job, etc.
I love the longer show crops. They're my favorite I think. I don't know a ton about cropping yet, but I plan for the dobe I add in the future to be cropped. I'll either rescue again or do the grudge work, begging, and pleading, for a reputable breeder
My baby had his ears cropped short when I got him. The vet did a terrible job and mutilated him. One ear is almost gone and flops on top of his head. I diligently keep it clean because everything falls in it! I have a pit whose ears are natural. I prefer the show crops on Dobies. But I had no choice with my boy. My vet feels sorry for him with is mutilated ear too. Maybe its bad vets, lazy owners? I don't know. I just have to deal with G's bad ear because someone didn't do it right.
Thank you I do too. I wish her breeder/cropped had removed the targus...she does on some doesn't on others. But they way she measures them they are always proportional. I love the shape she did though.
Rosemary.
Unfortunately so few good croppers do short crops you'll be hard pressed to find them looking nice
While I do prefer a short crop, I like one with shape. Just cutting a straight edge (or worse, one that curves outward in a semicircle) isn't appealing to me.
He is a rescue. I took him to my vet and he said they are too short. We tried posting for months. Nothing worked. His bad ear is noticeably smaller. Too short is a bad description. His bad ear has no back. Its gone
Yeah, I'm not a fan of the military crop either. It just doesn't really suit Dobes all that well. My favorite is a well shaped medium crop, like Brandy's. Whether I like the show crop or not really depends on the style, and how well it actually stands.
Same here on the show crops, some are sooo long and others like what it seems gathouse gets from Dr.grant are tall but not overly so. Show crops from the 70's are my favorite
Our 1st rescue, Roman, had a super short crop n flop. I never understood how ears THAT short managed to flop. I wholeheartedly agree that a bad crop job on a rescue is adorable. It's part of their story.
Are you trying to say with a show crop you are not cutting as much of the ear away and that better than a medium crop. Crops are just fashion or taste , when a few of the judges start noticing then that will be the preferred look.
Hold up a natural ear and then silhouette a show or medium versus a military/short ....you cut off a significantly larger piece of ear yes.
They are fashion yes. But the crops this was started about was more so the ugly, unshapen, too short crops likely from uneducated owners and byb breeders using horrible croppers who shouldn't be touching ears.
There are also a good many fewer expert ear croppers than there were even 5 years ago and no new vets are really learning to do it properly. They are fed all the AVMA animal rights crap in vet school and therefore never have a desire to learn for fear of their peers frowning upon them.
My point was with a show crop is their is a longer cut area ! you may be leaving more of the ear behind but you have also cut more distance on the ear. I love the show crops but i am finding myself drawn to the pics of males with short crops and females with natural ears.
I agree amateur cropping is a bad thing!
I was torn between natural ears and crop but as you can see I went with crop. One of my friends asked me who did the cropping since it looked like a show cut. What do you guys think? Is it kinda like a show? My baby girl "Squirrel" is 6.25 months old.
She is a little shy of 6 months, 1 week. I like her long ears...helps me see her over back of my sofa! She was a little younger in this pic but maybe better view of her ears

I love the show crops, but we didn't have an option. Striker's ears aren't super short. I'd call his a short-medium crop. Striker had the tip of one ear missing so the vet left what length she could with having both ears still even. I know most people likely wouldn't have that issue though.
Very nice pup! How old? I love seeing all the different face color marking patterns and what a difference light eyes make...all are so beautiful on this site
I personally do not like the tall show crop, I think the doberman is a working breed and a medium and sometimes short crop fits the dog much better. JMO
