Gentle Leader Harness and Kefir

Why did I not buy one of these earlier? They are amazing. Striker has always walked well on a leash at home, but by our vet's guidance, we kept him pretty close to home until he finished his vaccinations since dobes are so prone to Parvo.

Once he got out in public, he forgot his leash "manners" with all the new smells, sights, people, etc... and pulled on us like crazy. He's almost 50 pounds at 18 weeks so this was a bit of an issue since he was pulling me also! :roflmao:

We picked up a Gentle Leader harness the other day, and the difference has been day and night! It is amazing. He hasn't pulled at all. I never would have thought simply changing a harness would work.

Also, Kefir.... definitely going to keep adding that to his diet. He's on antibiotics at the moment, and the vet suggested adding yogurt to his diet. I saw the Kefir on the shelf next to the yogurt, and I am adding both yogurt and Kefir to his meals. I don't even have to hide his big Keflex pills from him (it's actually a C-word generic form). I just have to put the pill in the Kefir, and he gobbles it right up. I think my boy is addicted to the stuff! lol

I'm sold on it too...love the harness!

My parents have chickens and ducks, which means we have 5-6 dozen eggs in our refrigerator at any given time. We enjoy the chicken eggs, but the duck eggs have a slightly gamey taste to us. I'm sure it's okay, but since they're higher in protein and cholesterol, I'm wondering if it's okay to give them to a dobe puppy. We do give him chicken eggs on occasion, but I know my corgi especially, loves the duck eggs.

I love no-pull harnesses while you're training loose leash walking.

I actually just bought one of the Gentle Leaders tonight. Bella was walking beautifully on a loose leash in the Fall when she was a puppy, but one loooong winter and 25 lbs later, and she'd pulling and barking at people like crazy!! Tried the gentle leader for a brief walk to try it out and she's resisting a little and trying to paw it off her nose, but one small pull and some encouraging words, and she kept on walking! Even my 10 year old walked her with no pulling! Did anyone else's dog resist it at first? How long before they stopped resisting completely?

If she's resisting, you didn't introduce it properly.

I didn't watch this video in its entirety, but it might be helpful:

How to Introduce a Head Halter (So Your Dog LOVES It!) - YouTube

I don't actually use mine to walk for at least a week or two. It's all about positive association in the beginning, but I mostly do this because I only use a GL with reactive dogs and I don't want to have a reactive episode associated with the GL.

Like MeadowCat mentioned, GL head halters or body harnesses are just like any type of training tool. They are meant to help teach loose leash walking, gradually weaning off of them to a flat collar.
