storms here in south florida today..........my sweet female doberman is shaking and we are attached at the hip. I am stopping to pick up a "Thunder shirt". I hope this helps her fears.....anyone else use them? We are going into the hurricane season and this season I hope it's silent.....shhhhhhh
I've heard of some people liking them. Poor thing! My dog growing up was deeply afraid of thunderstorms. Luckily ******* doesn't care. It actually makes her and my cats act really nutty lol. It's supposed to storm tonight and tomorrow, so I'll have a house full of nutballs running around
i have two females afraid of the storms one will pee the floor if left alone so we just leash and keep her close. my other girl is a hider and will go into the closet or the shower. She has developed a new reaction when she is outside and the pressure drops or a storm is close. She will get into the pool, depending on the severity, it will be the first or the second step. Its kinda of funny to see when its raining and your dog is hiding in the pool, but i know her little brain is a mess at the time.:sorted:
I use a thundershirt on Boss and it does work but if the thunder and lightening gets too intense I have to give him a xanax, or he will get crazy on me and since he has DCM I try hard not to let him get too amped up.
YES! But I don't use it for thunder. We have no problems with thunder over here.
Murphy has separation anxiety, so we use one at daycare. It works great for us, but you have to make sure you're putting it on correctly, not too tight, not too loose. Like a shirt that's 1 size too small.
I did go and buy the "Thunder shirt" I did put it on snug and so far she is just standing and not in a panic under my office desk........Thank you for all of your input..........
I've heard in general that they help with anxiety type issues (thunder obvious, travel, etc.) So it is possible it would help with reactivity. There's this post about T Touch and Anxiety Wraps (what the Thundershirt is, at its most basic description. So really, you can try it with an Ace bandage.) On the Peaceful Dog blog.
I have a thundershirt for Elke and for her, it helps in a mild storm. Strong wind and big thunder however it doesn't help and can actually get her more anxious. She has anxiety issues and epilepsy so she's not your average dog, though. I find that I have to give her the max dose of Benadryl approved by her vet and hope it kicks in before she goes over the top. She freaks out or can't take other sedatives so we spend a lot of late nights when it is stormy.
Hi Sherry - I still don't have a clue what a thundershirt looks like, or how they work...just curious.
- maybe someone has a photo of one to post (much appreciated)
Our puppy Kelly is the first dober of ours, that isn't freaked out by storms.
In 1977, once the wife and I was driving home with Tanya puppy, in the back seat.
It started to hail, the size of golf balls, on the car.
Our girl got so scared, she crawled under my wifes legs, in front of the front seat of a small Datsun B210.
Just hope you and family are safe, during hurricane season.
My thunder shirt is made out of soft gray fleece material very light with stick on strips of velcro....I put it on her and she seems to love the feel of the material otherwise she would be scratching it off...........the rain has stopped it's rained all day today.............
