My boyfriend and I have a two year old male doberman named Sylar! Sylar is very needy and he is a handful but we love him! We think that adding a second dog would be good for him because he gets along well with other dogs and loves to play! Plus we have a lot of room for him to run in our yard! We are thinking of getting a female boxer puppy but aren't sure how they will get along. Has anyone introduced a new puppy to their dobie?
Help!
Boxers and dobes tend to go well together, in my experience. Also, good that you want a female!
I've found that it's best to introduce two dogs in a neutral setting such as walking around the neighborhood together. That being said, Dreizehn met Ruthie in our backyard when she squeezed through a barely open door before I could catch her, lol. They were fine. But yes, neutral location.
I agree that boxers tend to be a good match for doberman play style. I do want to throw my two cents in that if you are adding a puppy to your family, you should do it because you want another dog, not just as a playmate for another dog. Also, I'm not sure what your boy is like or how well trained he is, but I would highly suggest making sure you are happy with his behaviors overall before adding a puppy. Pups tend to pick up on habits (good or bad) from older dogs, so it is always easiest when your older dog is reliable.
That being said, I think puppies are easy to introduce, just know your dog and if he isn't good with puppies I would supervise cautiously, especially while the puppy is small. Good luck in your decision and if/when you do get a pup be sure to post pics!
I think a male dobe and female Boxer would be a good fit if they got along. Then again I'm a little biased since my dog growing up was a boxer mix.
When introducing your dobe to a boxer puppy, I'd make sure it was a highly supervised visit. Let them ease into it. There's always a number of possibilities on how those things can go, so just be prepared.
I grew up with part of my family always having dobermans and the other half boxers. They have always gotten along but they were introduced gradually. Boxers play like a boxer and they tend to want to stand with their front legs on the other dogs. All of the boxers male or female have been very hyper compared to the dobes. It's kind of funny because the Dobermans look at the boxers like "you dummy" or "you're so annoying".
We always knew when the dobes were playing with the boxers because they would have "foam" all over their face and back from the boxer drool.
Hey guys! I promised I would keep you posted on our puppy situation! 2 days ago we introduced our new boxer puppy, Sadie, to our 2 year old dobie! Sylar had a bit of an adjustment period in which I thought we had made a mistake, however they are beginning to become friends and I think before long they will love each other! Pictures as promised!!
