Oh my goodness, you guys, you guuuuuys, I have been too tired every day with my rescue dobertoddler's boot camp (does anyone even remember us? I'm so sorry!), but today we had pretty much the best possible experience, and I need to share it with folks that are going to understand JUST how wonderful this was.

Quick refresher course: Lucy came to me as a completely untrained, unsocialized, crazyface of a dobertoddler one month ago. She barked at anyone but me, lungebarked at anything smaller than me, had no idea what a leash was, cried hysterically when crated, didn't even know "sit" with any degree of consistency, and... you get the idea. Standard rescue.

Today, while Lucy and I were walking with a friend of mine to the park, we passed by a yard with a mom and her 4 year old son playing. When the little boy saw Lucy walking calmly up the sidewalk in his direction, the little boy started saying "no, no no!" and backing away, very obviously scared. The mom explained that the little boy had been bitten by a large dog, and was now very afraid of them.

So. I own a doberman. It is completely unacceptable to me that there be anyone in the world that's afraid of my dog. Because my dog is the best dog.

So I crouched down next to Lucy, and coaxed the kid and the mom over: "Hey sweetie, would you like to meet Lucy? You should never, ever, EVER say hi to a doggie unless its mommy and YOUR mommy say it's okay, so you need to ask your mommy if you can say hi. But me and Lucy would both like to meet YOU, if your mommy says its okay."

When the kid and mom did slooowly edge over a little closer, I said, "This is Lucy. Lucy is ONE YEAR OLD. What's your name? How old are YOU?"

(His name was Roger, and he is four.)

So I said, "Roger, Lucy REALLY wants to sniff you, do you know why? Because Lucy likes to sniff EVERYONE! Is it okay if Lucy sniffs you? She makes a funny snuffle noise, and her nose is REALLY cold!"

And etc, etc, etc. But it ended with, "Oh Roger, that is such a VERY sweet hug, and Lucy REALLY likes hugs, and Lucy REALLY REALLY loves YOU!"

And Roger apparently really loves Lucy. As well he should. Because she is the best.

I did not have my camera with me to take a picture of Lucy and Roger -- but here is a picture of Lucy upholding the breed standard of elegance while daintily playing with her bubbles:
